Im talking lightweight rifles like Kimber mountain ascent / carbonlight / custom type of weight rifles in magnum rounds (7mm rem, 300 win type and upwards)
Where do you place your non-shooting hand? There seems to be three main groups of people
1. Holding fore end
2. Holding downward on top on scope
3. Hand tucked under stock/pinching rear bag
Interested to hear what technique guys that are consistently shooting 400+ yards at deer are using
1 or 2, never 3.

Very firm consistent grip with both hands. Pull firmly into shoulder.
Interesting. Have been using 3, seems to be popular is the US, with average results

Fired one round from my 7mm fatmax yesterday, using technique no.3 https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9a8cd2afa4.jpgheld 1/2moa for wind. 522yards. Impact is dead centre windage wise and 1/2moa above the point of aim. Rifle and scope is 7lb 3oz And fires a Berger 180 at 3210fps. I’ve only ever used technique no.3 apart from a couple of offhand shots.
I use 3 but have asked the question of those in the know and what ever works for you is the awnser.
I get great results with 3 and shoot all the different weight rifles I own the same.

A lot easier to get the pressure right on the front end if there is none :D
If I'm using a bipod I use 3 if I'm off my day pack I hold forend while testing over the pack as I find the pack is usually soft and moves around.

tbh it dosnt matter too much with good technique what style the most important thing is that you always do it the same way
aslong as your repetitive in how you hold the rifle and how much pressure you put on it you will be fine but number 3 makes it much harder to spot your shots
Usually 3 sometimes 1 if position dictates.
Never 2. I feel it changes the barrel stock pressure/flex where as neither out the other 2 do this
I use 3 whenever on the bipod, however if I'm shooting over the day bag & no pod, I hang on up front (1)
#1 ... get a grip, and a consistent firm one.
Google Sniper fore-end control, or something similar (cant remember off-hand) In training Pro-Snipers, they keep repeating, fore-end grip,control, and consistency, as crucial. They also point-out that the barrel has moved-upwards under recoil, Before the projectile has left the barrel. They further concede that people 'do-well' with no.3 , but too many uncontrollable factors . My father-in-law uses 3 with his .17 and cant do better than 1" @ 50m, my son and I get one ragged-hole, same rifle using fore-end control.Ironically ,he nails everything with his .223 and no.3. As others have said, whatever works really
Yep, it’s a personal thing.
Don’t assume that because snipers do something it’s the right way or something to follow. I have known some extremely capable sniper shots, but plenty of average ones too. They tend to use very heavy, long barreled rifles too, which can allow them to get away with poor form.

Yep @MB thanks for posting he gives a very good argument on why you need to hold that fore end!
My consistency on target has improved way more since following his shooting steps.
He also has some good books with a lot of good advice in them.
Not just on how to shot but also rifle maintenance and reloading. All good positive stuff which is nice to see in today’s world:)

I did try 3 for a few months last year but with the carbonlight it just didn't provide the accuracy I was expecting so I went back to "1" and I seem to be doing a little better. I only shoot out to 450m with the 7mm08 and 200m with the .223 at this stage. I also wondered about the value of the bipod too, so trialled with and without to find I might be doing better without (using a bag/backpack instead), however that could be subjective. More practice required!
This weekend gone I was doing pretty well on a bipod with grip #1. The rabbits weren't complaining either... they were too busy being dead. Bang-Splat.

3 on my 22mag and medium barreled 243. I do need to review this.
1 with my 358. Use bipod and sling or bag and sling at the front. If I don't it will climb over my head.
even tension and pull into shoulder and down onto the bipod/bag is important or sore shoulder will result. (more an issue when shooting from a table)

Try 2 & 3 on a lightweight heavy cal, even not so heavy. They are not very controllable, now if you have a good or great brake then different story entirely. You don't really need much in the way of good technique or form at all then
I like and use #1 especially for the magnums.
Only ever 3. I can stay on target and spot shots with a suppressed Tikka 300wsm, just takes lot of practice. Funny how us humans don't like explosions going off right next to our faces :thumbsup:Quote:

Interesting as I had a catch up with Brian and Foster recently and we did a lot of range work and we all shot well with probably 15 odd rifles, Brian is the champ off sticks or bipod, Foster uses a forearm hold and is very deliberate, I use bags front and back and dont touch the forearm at all and shoot quickly, I guess its what suits each individual.

This is an interesting thread, but it’s like discussing religion or 1080 - everyone has strong views and talking about it is unlikely to change opinions.
If you were to practice 2 or 3 prone then what are you going to do when presented with a standing shot or sitting across knees shot ? If practiced in fore end hold then that will be the automatic default for everything and the field results will on average be better IMOQuote:

Ive seen it before...theory goes along the lines of...preloading bipod to keep things down when fireing...to stop it jumping up so much... dont use a bipod myself so cant comment further.Quote:
