Help from the knowledge bank

Came into a few dollars and want to buy a LR beast for Tahr and Reds/Sika on the tops out to 400+.
Mates have 7mmRM and .308. The 7RM boasts awesome ballistics, but the blast is horrendous. I developed a flinch years ago when shooting .308 (aka mule) in competition so will stay clear of .30cal now I've overcome that with 6.5.
So I've been looking at the WSM range and liking the .270wsm and 7mmwsm. They both scream out of muzzle at well over 3200fps and drop and wind resistance is as good as 7RM.
Questions:
1. Are the fat short magnums still a problem with feeding into breech?
2. Are they both just as loud as 7RM?
3. Is finding brass an expensive nightmare?
4. Do the WSMs boot like mules?
5. Is barrel life particularly short?

Lastly, does anyone have a Tikka T3 Hunter Stainless Fluted in 7mm WSM with good quality scope they want to sell me? :)

Yep, inclined to agree. Although I'll never again shoot as many centre fire rounds in one session as I used to with .308. It was more the repetition than the recoil or blast Cam

A mate of mine has a sako 85 finlight in .270 wsm that he would part with, with any of those cals in a lightweight rig
I would want a can or break, .270 or 300 wsm brass easy to get and same with 7 rem mag I have a 7 LRM which is just a
bit bigger than a rem mag and its fine to shoot with a can but you still definitely know its a magnum :thumbsup:

Haha that's some pretty solid advice.

If I was you the first thing i'd do being going to a magnum would be to test if I still had a flinch or not. Have a mate load the rifle for you and one round in about 10 not load anything. You may be surprised to find you still flinch. Read this somewhere as one of the suggested ways to test, as most people don't even notice they're flinching as it's all covered by the blast.

I didn't think I was flinching the other day when I had a bruised shoulder after about 75 rounds with the shotgun the night before, but then I had a jam and I flinched like fuck. Only reason I noticed it was because there wasn't the normal cover of the round going off. Really surprised me as i've had the odd missfire due to various reasons (not cycling bolt back enough, thought I had 1 more in the magazine, etc) and never flinched before.

Have a look at a 6.5saum especially if your shy of recoil

a rem mag will probably burn the throat out just as quick as a wsm but depends on how you treat it just like any other calibre

Just read your initial post again. For 400m, I don't think you need a magnum. Most medium calibers with the correct choice in projectile will give you sufficient energy for decent kill at that distance.

If you do go to a magnum, go for the heaviest rifle you can find. No shit, light rifle + magnum = kick. Of course heavy rifle and tops rifle in same sentence dont go well together :D Limbsaver recoil pads and either a brake or suppressor can reduce the felt recoil significantly.

Personally, I would look at something like a 7mm08 with a longish (? 26 inch) sporter barrel. Awesome projectiles available, longer barrel will give you bit more speed and energy. Put a lightweight modular can (dpt or ssr) on it, and use 162 amax or 140 berger vld hunting, happy camper.

You dont need a magnum for 400 but to shoot 400 in the wind you do. Its about bucking the wind not the drop.

I think a 280 would do you well, not quite a magnum but better performance then 7mm08.

Get someone to make you a load with the 162amax around 2800fps :)

Flatmate is going on his OE soon and will be selling his 7mmRM that he uses on tahr when he's back home in Chch. It's a Tikka stainless/synth, braked, can't remember the details of the scope but I'll find out tonight. Has fired 70-90 rounds from memory.

Um, take it from someone who shoots a fair amount of long distances in wind using non-magnum calibers...

162 amax @ 2500 (sedate out of a 7mm08) 12mph full value wind = around 7.0moa
162 amax @ 3000 (7mm RM), same wind = 5.3moa

bottom line is if you do not adjust, both will be a complete miss. sure the magnum gives you some room for error, but it is significantly less than what most folks think...

If you are shooting the tops like myself(Rem700 270WSM, 150Gr VLD at 3180fps) put a removable brake on it. You have plenty of time to put your hearing protection on at 400+

7mmRM should be more than enough.

I don't have a lot of experience with the bigger calibres but did have a Tikka T3 in 7.08m. I hated the "BOOM" once you pulled the trigger, got it suppressed and it was like night and day.
Not only was the huge blast knocked down to about .22 mag levels but it was a total pussy to shoot. I would guess about a 50-60% felt recoil reduction, you could even keep the sight picture through the scope.
It makes shooting a pleasure and if you have blast / flinch / recoil aversions it will be the best money you can spend.

Personally wouldn't piss around with a WSM/SAUM, get the 7RM from factory, brake/suppress it and be done..

I had a T3 in 270WSM, now have a 7RM in the exact same get up (T3), can hardly notice any recoil difference when shooting similar weight pills.

Chucked a suppressor on it, load was quick and easy to suss (helps of people here with a 7RM shooting 162's/168's), and was happily shooting steel plates at 800 yards.

Which ever way you go, get on the range and shoot at distance :) Good luck!

So shooting a 308w at 500yds moa on the day (2 weekends ago) 2.5 for wind, for the 303brit, 5moa so the problem is what? Frankly if you are poor at wind reading then practice, join a TR/FTR club, shoot every weekend. Blasting a f-ing big magnum at 400yds when you have to pay for it, ammo and carry the damn thing as a cure for your poor wind reading ability is plain silly IMHO.

A 7mm Rem Mag with a good suppressor will do everything you need, and you will not have the aggravation or expense of trying to source ammo or brass for the WSM's, SAUM's or other orphans. Everyone makes 7mm Mag. The suppressor will tame the recoil as well as the noise, and give you an advantage for multiple shots.

Wind reading at a range with flags/grass etc is a lot different than shooting long range across a gully with no indicators, then every wind advantage is exactly that an advantage.

If you are shooting a 308 across a gully or up a hill at 500 yards with little/no wind indicators at an animal, you are going to need a huge amount of luck if you think you are going to kill it even if you are shooting 208s.....

Fully agree was more making the point that its not about the amount of bullet drop, Like most people assume but its about the wind bucking thats the huge advantage :)
hard to guess the full wind value with out flags, with Magnum you have more room for error.
Not meaning to make it sound like its a non issue just much easier when you have a 5mph window of error.

Hunt4life look at getting a 6.5 win mag built they are nice and tame to shoot almost like shooting a .270 but are still loud

So tell me if you flinch, what effect does it have on the accuracy of a normal game shot? I'd say under heavy recoil the would by few who don't flinch?

I read an article that claimed it was a lot more common than anyone wanted to admit, which is why it suggested those methods I posted above to test if you have one or not. It stated that a lot of world class shooters flinch but because they flinch exactly the same way every time it doesn't really effect accuracy. Makes sense, but I guess not flinching at all would be even more consistent?

If you flinch during/after the recoil I guess everything's already happened that needs to. If you flinch before the shot may be a different story? Sure someone here knows more.

I have 2 7mm Rem Mag, both suppressed, i will shoot ALL DAY with both of them if need without hesitation. Unsuppressed is is a VERY LOUD boom and will kick, however i still can fire "few" shots without to many issue, it is all about how you keep up with it.
