    Kaipara Long Range - vids

This is a cool little invitational event (private land) held north of Auckland. Not one of mine, I go along as a competitor. It is great to turn up to someone else's event and let them do all the organising while I just shoot. Then I go along and make the day difficult by trying to video the event as well... everything suffers as a result!

I have uploaded a bunch of stage videos to youtube. These are just a couple of them:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbFUHsNAnKs

I get the comment every now and then that people would like the American PRS style of shoot to come to NZ. Well, it has sort of but at the moment very few of the events are big enough to handle more than about 25 people at a time, they are all on private land, and many of them are invitational events with non-refundable entry fees to be paid in advance. In fact I know a couple where to get an invite you need to be recommended by an existing competitor! Most of the organisers are a bit wary of just having anyone turn up and many of them have been burned a bit by people saying "yes, yes I am coming" but then never turning up...

So how can someone get an invitation? I recommend you turn up to a couple of events that are open, meet people, be safe, have a good attitude, have your stuff halfway sorted (i.e. good rifle, good drop data, range finder, spotting scope, etc.), and you will likely meet someone who knows someone. You can of course, run your own event or you could try and get in touch with myself and see about getting me to run an event for you - all you need is access to a suitable property!

Got a video of me at one of the stages showing how easy it is to make a fundamental screw up that costs you significant points. I would have uploaded it but... some of the conversation in the video is reasonably normal "banter" at these events between mates that know each other but it isn't really suitable for public viewing It never occurred to me that I read the wrong distance out of the rangefinder and so everything else I did (drop data, wind estimate) was based on that error. Even with the first miss you see me trying to work out what is going on... but time is ticking away...

Yes, there were a few target "issues" for the day. Mostly caused by the 338s hitting as hard as they do plus a couple of cables being damaged by bullet splatter off targets or being directly hit.
Having someone who knows what they are doing spotting for you helps a lot though. Unfortunately my 6.5mm, 130gr bergers aren't particularly good for trace or bullet impact so spotting them can be tricky.

Hey @Gillie, how you going? Hope well.
Thank you a lot for share, as you always do, it looks like a great event and a lot of good times.
Please keep it coming, maybe one of these days if I find out with reasonable time before I may fly in for a hang out.

    Cheers.

Cheers, @PERRISCICABA. Yep am good - stupid busy at work at the moment but that is all good for the overtime.
Next reasonable event will be a medium range event (out to 600m) the weekend of November 21 here in Taranaki. Just sorting out if it will be a one day or two day with a 22LR event tagged onto it for the second day. Malcolm will come over and help run that event as well but we'll find room for competitors who want to stay the night and who don't mind fitting in.

More details to come once I have them finalised.

And i am not saying the 308s did any good but they were there!

    Fixed it for you!

Top placed 308 was 5th over all. Beaten by 2x338L and 2x260Rem.

This Kaipara event is about on par for difficulty with our Woodstock event. Only two competitors got over halfway in points or in hits - one shooting a 338L and myself with my 260Rem and i shot poorly in about 4 of the 16 stages.

Kiwi Greg, i was seriously impressed and i have had a couple of people comment as much to me on the videos.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm0c7LYd1TU

I think the M10 comes in about 14lb for the 338Lapua and the recoil looks bugger all with your older brake design! Destroys his muzzle cover as well!
Of course this guy is a very serious shooter with some great technique which helps, but the brake certainly does it job!
