Whats the deal with this range? Do you need to be a member etc? Fees?

    First I've heard of it.

From googling it looks like the shortest berm is 300 yards, so I take it any load workup, sighting of new rifles etc is done at a separate range?

If you ever want to head out to a farm for some target shooting or to try and knock over a few pests feel free to PM me. My partner and I have a few friends farms we go to every now and then.

    Other target shooting clubs are
Malvern Rifle Club Malvern Rifle Club
Ashburton District Rifle Club Ashburton District Rifle Club

Malvern's season is almost finished, Ashburton does shoot during the winter.

No, $100/day can simply not be called a bargain.
Obviously worth it to yourself, but certainly no bargain.
I hope you get lunch included for that !

these days you wont get club ranges that are use-able with out a range officer, that is a condition of it to be certified. private land is what your after, or become a range officer. Thats what i did...

Interesting - as in electronic hit detecting? Pretty spiffy.

Haha - if I could find private land I'd be on it for sure. I'm used to Canada where any crown land (basically DOC land) is free to shoot on. Only had a range membership because it's a condition of owning certain firearms there. Usually crown land is closer and is a lot nicer scenery too.

On that note.... is there anything explicitly prohibiting taking a walk 2 hours into the bush on DOC land and sighting a rifle in or target shooting to simulate hunting conditions? (Proper backstop, known area etc etc etc)

In my opinion, not at all. As long as you pick your designated area well away from other people you should be fine.

As for shooting on a range without an RO present, you could try looking at joining Handloaders? 24/7 access via use of a electronic swipe card. PM me for further details on both scenarios.

electronic targets are great, 4 sensors pick up the projectile and can read off your tablet at the firing point, during testing i believe they were getting accuray to 1mm. the also do bullet speed but they dont match my labradar so im unsure the accuracy of them.

Have to say, I'm really humbled by all the responses and help here. Had a great time with Gadgetman last Sunday at the Handloaders association range, even though my scope worked its way loose towards the end
