Thread: Preferred shooting position

Just out'a interest, what shooting position do you prefer for general load development & sighting in ?

I normally shoot prone of a bipod or my bag of cat-litter & can shot pretty well, but the other day I went to the local range ( where I haven't shot for years ) & shot off their bench with a rest / bipod & shot like shit

depends what you're use to I surpose, so whats yours

I prefer the bench and bags of sand.....

I shoot like shit too (on paper) every Deer an Pig I pointed the gun at over the last two years has been dropped with one shot so I'm not too worried about my paper results.

I noticed something the other day when Ashlee shot the 338s, both her groups were about 3/4-1 moa low ?

So I grabbed one & shot the same.

I haven't noticed it before but would explain some inconsistencies from bench to prone shooting.

I'm going to take her & a few toys up the range & check it again today before the next steel shoot on the 3rd.

I like to sight in using a bench + bi pod and sack of grass seed.

Personally I get better results from that position than on the ground prone.

Some people say that if a rifle has been sighted in from a bench there can be some variation shooting prone due to the change of eye position and angle. Would be interesting to see if that's what Kiwi Greg has found?

Has anyone noticed any change in POI shooting those big 338's so close to the ground?
Ie does the bullets shockwave get interrupted by the ground and cause POI shift?

Single handed, unsupported, other hand in pocket, issf standard pistol!

bench and sand bags as long as there isnt a 416 making it rain under the roof Dont like the range when its busy though.I will always sight in the way I intend to shoot in the field.

I shoot my smaller cals off the bench with bipod and rear bag
Anything with 'magnum' in the name is usually shot prone.

Shouldn't make any real difference there as the sound barrier has been left behind.

If there is a spot free at the local range I will sit at the concrete bench (99% of the time) If not its prone.

Funny enough though when I shoot deer its almost always laying down

In the back of the Uterus, its standing, in the thick stuff it's standing, from the bush on the edge of open country it's sitting with a tree etc for a rest, on the Open Tops it's prone!

In ISSF it's standing and in IPSC (Handgun, Rifle & Seedgun) it's whatever position you can get into to get as much accurately placed lead down range, in the shortest time possible!!!

Think that positions called Cradle Philipo or if it was better positioned with the feminine gender could be close to 69er
