PRS is it a discipline practiced here in nz

PRS (practical rifle shooting I think) is it a sport shot here in nz, I believe it is becoming quite popular in the states.

I like the 3 gun sort of style of shooting or the more lively stuff that has the timer running and more different targets etc. I am kind of over trying to punch small holes into paper from the same 3 or 4 positions at the same ranges. Simulated hunting matches might be another alternative but you will need more space again for that.

Curious to see if it is a thing in nz, I have never heard of a match is it something people are interested in shooting.

Simon and Malcolm Gillice have running these types of cimp for years. They also established the Hihitahi challenge which incorporated a 10km hike, several varying range shooting stations, native plant identification, navigation tests, emergency first aid tests, observation tests and traversing tests. Most of tge shooting was time limited and included range estimation. No range finders or gps were allowed or any other form of referencing other than map and compass.
These were a very good test of outdoor hunting skills but ultimately insufficiently patronised by hunters because some did not want to expise themselves to open competition of all skills. Thought the concept great and competed annually with about 40 others.

Sounds like a fun comp, native tree identification would pretty much put me out, I know a pohutakawa when its flowering that's about it.:thumbsup:

If they hold it again you should enter. Its about fun and self improvement. The prize table always had more than enough for all competitors.

Also interested. Talked to Simon a few times. Most comps are up in the Auckland area. Would like to see something like that in the Wellington area.

Nah auckland sounds good, I'll keep an eye on it.

It's not a standardized sport with same rules in NZ. Each shoot is unique depending on theme.
Eg walk around on a farm with natural rests like fence post or rocks. Another might have some barricades and unlimited round count. Another might involve running a few hundred meters and you lose points if too slow. Most have targets at deer hunting distances up to 300m but a few are out to 600 or even 1000m. In the south island there a couple out to 1500m. Keep an ear out on this forum and ask on the GPRE page to get in touch. Several nzda branches hold field target type shoots and wellington did once the "runnin rifle" so ask around and see if you want to join one. NzDA ran a national sporting rifle shoot recently at tokoroa range, more formal 4p but with some rapid and snap and a running boar.

Should be 6-7 great matches this year in the south island with a mix of PRS , field long range, elr and elr 22.

They stopped running them last year, it may come back in fashion but the number of attendee's made it untenable, so 2018 was the last one.

Bagheera won it a few times too iirc at least the 2018
