I have shot shotgun, rifle, and pistol since I was a kid. All require different techniques but I have shot international competition with all three successfully. I think rifle shooters learning to use a shotgun have some difficulty for a while, but not as much as shotgun shooters learning to use a pistol! Nothing is harder to overcome than bad habits that are fine for one discipline but not for any other.
one bad habit I have sometimes when using a shotgun is for some reason I pull down on it as I fire, dont know where that comes from

That is flinching from anticipating the recoil. You momentarily tense up and your forward arm pulls down. The recoil is much less noticeable with a good shooting stance that lets you 'roll with the punch'. Get an experienced shotgun shooter to give you a few pointers.
