School me on ballistics - Converting distance to moa etc...

I am interested in looking at dialing scopes for hunting and target and and am particularly wanting to know what people use to convert the shooting distance/range to moa, mills or mrad systems.

I know the basics of ballistics, but want to know what do people use in the field to know what to dial your scope to. Do you use range finder with internal ballistic calculator, phone app, drop chart etc.... what works for you?

I just use a rangefinder and the hornady app on my phone for the longer range pest shooting(200m zero). Works for me. I always say I must do up a drop chart but never do, I figure if I'm dialing for wind then im going use the app anyway.

I own 2 calibres and have a double sided drop chart in my bino harness.

Angled solutions from 4DOF are currently incorrect. If you use an RF that gives EHD it will be ok but don't use the incline function. It has been fucked for a while but I have managed to get acknowledgement of the issue and some action on fixing it.

For the average hunting scenario I recommend using a BDC turret so it is metres off the RF to dialing metres on the turret. Good out to 400m for more or less all circumstances. Use paint pen to mark hundred/fifty metre increments on your turret. Develop a firing solution with a half decent ballistic solver for the average environmental conditions you'll hunt in and market this on turret.

This is probably the best way to do it, can even get the IDTS turret tape if want to be flash.

As far as angle compensation goes just use TBR/EHR.

@gimp I'm assuming the when you say solutions you're meaning both the inputs, direct angle entry or the tilt function are giving incorrect solutions?

The ballistic solution generated when inputting any shot with a "shooting angle" input other than 0⁰ is incorrect

It's simple and it works. More so with FFP and a functional mil-based reticle; you need a way to deal with wind

Thats great, so basically your creating your own cds turret with all the flexibility should you change your projectile and load etc..

If you can find your way around powerpoint, making custom turret labels isn't too hard. Same principle, and gives good flexibility. I work in 25m increments.

Oh man.......that rabbit hole is getting wider and deeper already..... WHEN and ONLY when you can consistantly call your shots into a nice tight group, pattern of holes that fall within a consistent small distance from where you pointing at....then and only then should you've even THINKING of extending range to target..... But what would I know??? I seldom shoot paper and don't shoot long,I know I'm too inconsistent so try to keep range short. You have seen frustration if that is stretched. Knowing how much or little the projectiles will drop doesn't help if you cannot hold group tight enough to make that count.
