Sks at the range

Picked up an sks norinco on one of those dollar reserve auctions. What a cool little rifle. But at sbout 60 rounds the rear sight blew right off the gun and disappeared. Couldn't get the spring to seat properly so back gun city. The fella at the counter was awesome and gave me another rifle without question. Only problem was when I got home and started to clean that horrible grease off, the trigger group fell on the floor!
I could get it back in because of the shitty mag they have to fit to them. So back to store again and same very helpful guy pulled a few rifles out for me to choose from. I secured the best I could from the look of them and tested the cycling. Just finished strip and clean. It's a mint one this one.
Just thought I'd share so to warn others to check basic operation of these Ol shitters before leaving the store. Might save a lot of gas and time. Still love it. Heaps of fun to shoot and cheap ammo.

A lot has to do with the shite mags they put in the new ones. The military mags are fool proof. I had a 16" one that ran flawlessly from day one.

yep my old one was awesome, shot my first deer with it. Some of the newer ones look badly assembled.

I never had a problem with any sks's I owned ...that's going back a few years though...

Regret selling mine, will get another one eventually. I found a small piece of leather under the barrel at the front of the stock kept the whole thing under tension and stopped it rattling around.

I bought one new about 20 years ago and got a 1000 round case of ammo dirt cheap from a mate. Had it for a couple of years then sold it ...duh.

Bought another one recently,minty 20" with cut-down military mag. Great gun for plinking at the range and I just like having an SKS in the rack.

Dunno about grenade launchers on them but it sounds like yours had the rare sight launcher option

I didn't like the short LOP so chucked it in an ATI montecarlo. Not fussed with the result so I'll take a punt on a 2" butt pad off e-bay or amazon and put it back in the lighter timber stock. Great fun and reasonably accurate till it heats up. And the best thing is every GC sale you can pick a spare up for 3 hundred and leave the cosmoline on for hassle free storage.

I grabbed one cheap off a guy from tardme. Assured me it cycled fine. Cleaned all the goop out, and made the inside of the barrel shiny again, then took it to the range. Cycled ok, until the last round which went vertical and got case crushed by the bolt. Bugger. Tried 3 more mag fills with the same result. Got home and tweaked the follower. Out to the range again, same result. Double bugger.

So, grabbed a 7 round Tapco mag, and spent an hour filing and fitting it. Hand cycles fine with no last round vertical. Now just need to get to the range for the acid test.

I love the rifle though. A bit quirky compared to my bolt actions, but fun to shoot. Only other problem is that the ammo container seems to have a large hole in... Hmmmm...

Were you jamming seven rounds into it? Mine would do the same and a mate advised just putting 5 in so not to over compress the spring. Seemed to go ok last few outings like that.

Have looked at the Yugoslavian ones that are mil surplus in the states, very well made with real nice timber, pity a few crates of those don't end up down here, they would be far superior to the Chinese version, check them out on you tube (classic firearms) and all the other consignments of mil surp from eastern Europe. Mind Blowing

Hiya. Nope. Tried with 2 to 5 rounds, always the last one went vertical. The std mag is only a 5 round job isn't it?

Yep Had same problem seven, and the last one jams, but open the bottom and lay 5 rounds and close. when I'm ready to fire, I cock and load ect. Just as good as having a removable mag, certainly wont get 10 rounds in there :)
I really liked my russian made SKK back in the days before gun control in OZ, got it and a case of ammo for $300 dollars, and got $300 back for it with the gov buy back :thumbsup:

Ow, I would like a rusky SKK, hate to think what one would be worth now, prob more than a reasonable AK...

Look at your cartridge follower (the bit on the arm that elevates the cartridges) is it level and does it float freely if its stiff and wont rock the last round will probably be wrongly presented.

Had these 2 SKS's and the SKK just before the close of the OZ buy back scheme.

Hi Marty. Yep checked that when I tweaked the follower. I did notice that that the follower plate was nose high, but I levelled it. When hand cycling the bolt, I noticed that the last round always seemed to present nose high. I am hoping the Tapco will work ok. Have seen just about every YouTube clip about mags for SKS, and the general consensus seems to be in favour of the tapcos.

I have found that 5 rounds runs well, I tried bending the follower on different angels but always with 7 rounds seemed to cock the last round to left of the breach and the round noses into the edge of the breach, and on the last round with soft nose projectiles it either takes a piece off the nose or stops the round from going in. With FMJ rounds it work every time with 7 round.
