Sub clements
Haha, i knew that would get you reading.
I experienced two subs yesterday. Temperature was character building at best.
When i left home it was cold but it is winter but when i turned into clements rd and the D-Max kept going straight i wondered what the deer would be doing in a frost like that.
Committed, i got to a spot and put on all my winter fluffys. After an hour of not much sign and less excitement i was trying to stay positive, i decided to loop back through the colder ,dark , damp bush to see if they were hiding there but i spied a neck down my spur.
After almost 20 minutes trying to pick a shot i decided to move a little and risk being seen. Yip (SEEN) by another hind bedded nearby . While i was trying to steady a shot against a tree under its chin it stood up and made it easy.
Crosshair tight behind the shoulder and wok, hunt over.
The Robert cast 330gr Hollow point powder coated slug at subsonic worked well. Much nicer to shoot than a heavy 45/70 hard cast at crazy speed also. Attachment 278649
The slug blew lots of pistons and rings out the back but there was no lead in the wound so i think it expanded into a big ball and did its job.

That's awesome- keen to see more on the rifle and loads!

Not the Gould mold. N.O.E mold.

What distance was the deer at?thinking of cast bullets for the 44mag
-
Deer would only of been about 55yds. Range isn't an issue in that place.
I think about casting my own slugs all the time and I'm sure its coming but the smart money is to let the pros do it for you.
Robert makes a 44cal, 270gr slug
-
Yea tried the heavy 44 from him but my Rossi twist only like 240g pills.
-
Nice conditioned hind should be good eating.
-
Have loaded up some 240g stp with 8.5g trail boss will see how they go.
-
Being subsonic do you still get the jellying/shock damage around the wound channel like supersonic rounds?
I'm considering a 450 Bushmaster to run subs in

Surprisingly the damage is similar to a high velocity bullet.Attachment 279324Attachment 279325

Thanks, makes sense as subs are still travelling pretty fast and are a heavier projectile so still a fair bit of energy
-
I didn't realize there were any deer in the ol' mill.

A sub in 45/70 cost me a deer n a sprained ankle....it lost its shine after that.....
