Thread: Taihape NZDA Field Target Shoot

What an awsome day today. A great shoot all round from my point of view. The course was fun, people were great, and plenty of targets hit. Could not have asked for a better day weather wise.
I've had a quick look at some photos and some video i took today and i'll post some of them when i get time.

Well, borrowing someones 5 shot magazine because he couldn't fit 5 in his 3 shot magazine was certainly bending the rules... Still i suppose not closing the bolt properly didn't help him out either. Dry firing is great and all but not when you are under a time limit!

So as promised a few photos and a couple of videos:
Stage one.
No time limit for the first target, then 40 seconds to get up and move to a second location and fire at a further two targets. Targets set between 130m and 244m.


Stage 2.
10 seconds to fire 1 one each at three targets. All targets about 30m away.

Stage 3.
20 seconds to get into a position and then fire 2 shots at a single target. Target set at about 120m.

Stage 4.
60 seconds to fire 1 shot at a close but small target, 1 shot and a larger distant target and then 1 shot on the small close target again. Close target was 107m, far target was 180m.

Stage 5.
25 seconds to fire 1 shot each at two close but small targets. Both targets were 100m away.


Stage 6.
35 seconds to fire 1 shot at a close target then move forward to a second location and fire 1 shot at a distant target. Close target was 100m, far target was 259m.

Stage 7.
60 seconds to fire 1 shot each at 5 seperate targets. Targets were located such to force the shooter to shift their position. Targets were located between 101m and 281m.

Some great footage there Simon. A great way to spend the Sunday thanks to Ian and Kathy for the property to shoot on and Steve and Nathan for the the food and LL sponsored beverages and last but not least Malcom and Simon Gillice that handed out how to shoot steel gong lessons!
The distances wern't great but add in some time restraints and some small targets withe some positional changes and it makes what looks easy a bloody good challenge.

Thanks Andy, it occurred to me afterwards that i forgot to thank Ian & Kathy for them allowing us to use thier property. Its an awesome location and the club is extremely lucky to ahve access to it.
The course this year was set a little more difficult than the one we had last year - more movement, position changes and time limits. But the Taihape competitors have obviously improved their shooting skills as well because even with the more difficult course, scores were up on last year.

Malcolm and I primarily run these shoots because we enjoy shooting them and we get to catch up with some great people round the place. We really believe though, that these shoots are great for hunters who want to improve their shooting ability. It gets them off the flat, known distance range, off their bipods and away from shooting groups. We find it great to watch how different people shoot the different stages, who uses what support is on offer, who runs out of time, who sets up a position that gets them into trouble, who gets distracted by the second target when they should be thinking about hitting the first one. And Rushy you are right - who gets so worried about the time limit they stop thinking about hitting the target.
Position 4 (off the gate) was good for this. I think Malcolm and I were the only people that knelt for the first shot, laid down for the second shot and knelt again for the last shot. Everyone else shot all three sitting.

Two shoots coming up in January - Dannevirke and New Plymouth.

Any pics of the targets you guys shoot. I used to shoot air rifle FT, metal drop down targets (rat, rabbits etc). Was this paper/score based or hit/miss steel?

Just about all the targets are steel. Three close ones are HDPE. All targets are hung from a frame made from 12mm reinforcing bar. Targets are hung using conveyor belt rubber straps bolted to the targets.

Scores are just hit or miss. Having paper to score just takes to long. Steel targets hit/miss i can score from the shoot position just from the sound.
