Taupo NZDA Prize Shoot 2012

So as i have for about the last 15 years or more i attended the annual Taupo NZDA Prize shoot again this year. This shoot is a graded four position shoot at 100m on NZDA metric targets.

Everyone who competes gets a prize. I shoot a bit crap in my prone so i ended up about 6th or so in B grade. I picked up a Little Skull Hooker donated by Steve's Wholesale. My partner didn't shoot as well as she did last year so she ended up about 10th in D grade but she still picked up a pasta dish set.

My self shooting sitting with my Sako Quad Varmint in .22LR. It only has an 8x scope so i use the spotting scope to view shots when i can't see them. I have it that close so i don't have to move position to see through the scope.

My partner shooting standing. She shoots a 1949 Brno .22K hornet that has been re-stocked with one i made at high school.

Yes, the Taupo branch prize shoot is well worth the effort of attending. We travel down from North Auckland branch each year and it's great to catch up with other regulars from the central and southern NI branches. Good feed at the prize giving, roast pork, lamb and venison this year. We managed our best finish for quite some time but it's still both depressing and impressive to watch Brenda P come back after having a kid and take out the A grade...

Sounds like a lotta fun. I wonder if they'll promote it a bit more for 2013 to get more shooters involved.....

They did promote it throughout the NZDA. Our club recieved notice of it and it was in the Hunting & Wildlife magazine. There was 50+ shooters there. Not as many as in previous years but still a very good turn out.

They run a "Big Balls" hunter class competition as well as the graded shoot. The hunter class is still a four position shoot but only hunter wiegth rifles with minimum caliber of 243.

Always wanted a K hornet, nice. Your partner has a bigger scope than you Gillie:thumbsup:

Yep the k hornet is a nice little cartridge - 40 grain v-max at 3200fps with 14 grains of powder - 52gr projectiles at 2800fps with 12.5gr of powder. Quiet, cheap to reload, no recoil, easier to clean than a 17 or 20 cal, with shot placement and projectile choice good enough up to fallow deer and that one will group under 2" at 200m... what more could i ask for?

Gem pointed this out to me as well. I did mention to her though the size of the scope doesn't make her hold it any steadier.
The scope is new, had a 2-7 VX-I on it for years. Gem has shown some interest in doing a bit more shooting and the swaro is a huge step up. The multi-zero function makes scope adjustments real simple for essentially a range rifle.

I still struggle owning a rifle not sighted in for me though.... I mean what if i want to use it now?!!?
