    Tire stands for steel targets.

Don't know if this is maybe already a thing but thought I'd share as its working really well for me. I have hung my steel gongs inside large tires. Gives an easy way to stand them up and if you place them ontop of another used tire you can stand them on almost any contour. The tire also catches alot of the splatter on impact.
    If this helps you, Enjoy.

Take a while to destroy those holders, unlike the metal ones that can take a hammering.

Could move them easily when the cattle are going into that paddock too. Good idea.

Hey @Brian, they'd roll down your hills great - moving targets!! probly a bit fast for old @nor-west to hit but maybe @Tahr would get them . . . .

yeah he'd be more likely to hit them than me.
Seems silly sitting at a bench shooting when you should really be practicing standing shots.

I like how the tyres give a wider, black aiming circle. Thanks for sharing.

The best tires that I have found are low profile SUV ones. Plenty deep enough, heaps of room in the center and not so much rubber in them that the weight becomes hard to handle.

@LMcNab, could you post a photo of the rear of the tire please, how you mounted the gong and what material the white area is ?

The whole gong is actually an old used Plough colter with an offcut piece of Bisalloy welded over the hole in the center. The white area is the colter, which is not as thick as you would generally like for a shooting target but has held up to a fair old beating so far, mostly with my 223. They don't like magnums however and have a few holes from a couple of friends of mine. They are also getting a bit roughed up by my 308 and will need to be retired to 223 only soon and I will get some thicker ones made at the local engineers.
To mount the gongs I welded a great big bolt onto the back of the bisalloy and bolted a piece of mild steel to it which just goes through a hole I cut in the tire (that part is harder than it sounds, a grinder and a firm grip is needed), once it is through the hole I just bent it over and the job was done. It's not elegant but is very effective. With the new gongs I will probably get holes in them for hanging with either bent rod or chains as my welding has a habit of falling apart!
I will chuck up some more detailed photos tomorrow. Not sure I could get away with sneaking off to do that today!!!

Tire stands Mk 2 with new gongs. All R14 tires except for the quad tire which I think might be more temporary without the steel belting.

Other tweak that i've found helpful is putting a small section of large diameter steel pipe just behind the gong for it to swing into when hit, then it really rings like the dinner bell when you get a hit - useful if it's real windy or a fair way away

We had a large number of tires around our pistol club acting as dividers between lanes or as a base for mounds of soil to act as barriers.

All had to be totally covered with deep dirt or taken away before the range certification guy would re-certify our ranges. Apparently too higher a risk of ricochet.
