Subsquent to a conversation with @AndyAnimal I had an invite to Taihape NZDA Club shoot. These are held 1st sunday each month
The travel from Taupo all via sh1 was a relaxed 1 3/4 hour drive from Taupo.
The club range is hosted by a gracious farm family and the ranges were a great layout. There was a nicely laid out 100 range complete with shooting benches but the long range was something special! This range was set out overlooking a very large valley system looking into bush clad hills. The shooting mound and bbq facility overlooked this vally within which were placed several target frames and gongs. The targets were electronically monitored for instant poi recording on a screen procvded for each shooter. As well as a mound for prone shooting, a bench was also provided. The targets started at 200 yards distance and positioned at intervals out to beyong 1000 yards in sidlings, grass faces, amongst bush clearings etc. The layout was amazing and picturesque to boot. Shooting progressed from one target distance at 200 then progressed to longer ranges in turn.
Members were a cross section from young boys and girls, dads and grandads, all equipped with hunting rifles exclusively.
A friendly lot and a laid back happy atmosphere with tasty bbq thrown in the mix. Thoroughly enjoyable and at the same time challenging shooting. Also a great way to establish your range poi data at most distance all in a few hours.
All credit to the Taihape club and their farm hosts.![]()
