For normal 22LR 6mm mild steel plate will suit your needs fine - once you go to the jackets ammunition though say 22Mag or 17HMR then you need to step up to Bis80.

Steel supply place may be able to part you off a piece of 50mm x 6mm strip - then all you have to do is drill a hole in it, hang it and start shooting.
