For those hunters that are shooting game at longer distances i’m keen to see the stats on what everyone’s go to method for compensating wind is when hunting. I haven’t created a poll before so hopefully this works! The three options i’m thinking are:
1. Dialling for wind.
2. Using reticle to account for wind. IE Leupold windplex reticle, hold 2MOA using reticle.
3. Adjust point of aim. IE duplex reticle, aim for the crease, gut, bush in front etc to compensate.
For my duplex reticle, i dial, for my ffp scope with subtensions, i hold. Generally my duplex reticle isnt shooting far enough for bother worrying for wind. Way i see it is do one but dont mix the two. Wind switches and varys speed.
a mix of 2 & 3, depending on conditions, range and scope.
I hold and let my wind go after the shot so they dont smell me

When a deer is feeding totally broadside on with neck outstretched AND facing in the direction of the wind I always aim just behind the shoulder as there is a HUGE margin to allow the wind to drift the bullet into its neck.
If the wind gust dies down at the time of the shot the bullet will still hit in the kill zone which is why I like this method so much.
I have shot a lot of animals on windy days using this method and it works really well providing that the deer is pretty much side on (with neck nicely in-line with the shoulder) and you are under 600 yards.
On windy days if I can't get into the above situation I won't take a shot end of story.
I thought I'd be clever once and allow for wind drift (based on windmeter & ballistic app) on a very windy day by holding just on guts and guess where the bullet ended up?? Wind is just to unpredictable IMO.

I also use the method where I do my best to judge the wind. Figure out how far out I could possibly be then dial either half or the quarters of that value. My aiming point must still be a killing shot and worse case scenario must also be a killing shot. If it is outside of this I need to get closer or change angle so wind less affects shot.
Eg wind value equates to 6" of drift. Dial 3 or 4 " left. Worse case scenario bullet drifts 2 or 3 inches right of point of aim.
Prefer animals facing down wind so bullet drifts further forward or misses rather than gut shot
I just keep my deers inside 300yds,point and shoot.Wind doesnt bother a 150gr sst at 2969ft/sec inside 300yds.

Thanks everyone who contributed to the poll. The data seems to be showing roughly what I expected.
I dial vertically.
Then hold off for wind by reading the tussocks etc.
I also go shoot at the range on our furthest gongs when its picking up that way I have a better idea.
I know at 600y the 308 does drift significantly more than the 284 but then it's not apples when apples either.
