I'm going to zero my 7mm08 tomorrow. It is my first centrefire rifle. I've bore sighted it already (by eye). Thought I'd do a couple of shots at 25 metres to make sure I'm on paper, then see how it's grouping at 50 metres. When I'm happy at 50 metres, I'll see how it goes at 100 metres. Maximum hunting range at the moment is going to be 100 metres. Lattes are on hand, so I've got that covered. Any other advice?
Now those, I like. Do Gun City sell them?
Sounds like a plan, although if you bore sight it well (comes with practice!) you should be pretty close at 100, but a couple to check at 25 shouldn’t hurt.
I wouldn’t bother with 50, it won’t tell you much, if you are zeroed at 25 it should be very close at 100.
Where are you doing this?
What ammo you using? I can do you a quick, rough drop chart if you want to smack some gongs out further for a play.

I would only do 2 or 3 shots at 25m.
I bore sighted by looking down the barrel on my AR and it was close enough to be on a A4 target at 100m.

Yep, get it shooting bang on at 25 yards, then that should put you about 2.5" ish high at 100 (at 100 adjust it so that its hitting about 2.5" high) that makes the best use of the maximum point blank range. This means from 0 to 275 odd yards you can just aim straight at it, and you should hit it within 3" of where you are aiming.
Even 3 inches high at 100 works well, which extends the max point blank range to around 300 yards. This is the way i use to set my rifles up before i started using diable scopes and shooting out further.
Also when you are sighting it in, make sure you use a decent rest, sandbags etc under the front and rear of the stock, take as much wobble error out of it as you can for the zeroing. Ive seen a few blokes at the range trying to sight in just resting on their elbows and wondering why they are shooting all over the A4 paper at 100 yards - hopeless.
I bore sight at 25m from a good rest. Send one down the tube. Reset the rifle to have the cross hairs on the target, then turn the dials to line up the cross hairs with the hole. If I'm feeling I'm in an ammo burning mood I'll put a second one down the tube at 25m to make sure it is on target.Quote:

Its likely to shoot to the left, so take an extra side step to the right to compensate.

May help if you have 1/4 moa clicks. 1 click will move the bullet impact 1/4″ at 100 yards. But you need to make 4x times number of clicks (16 clicks=1″) to move the bullet impact the same distance at 25 yards.

It's done. Zeroed at 90 metres which was convenient for where I was shooting.

I've been using the hornady sst for ten plus years now and have had great results, have found them to be a accurate round and as long as i do my part they stop animals. Also used the gmx when i coundn't get any sst and same results.
Thats all good, but im sure like most of us, you will start seeing deer out a bit further and you cannot get closer to them, you will really be best served then by having the POI 2.5 inches higher than your aim point then. It means that the closer shots, say 100, you will hit it 2.5" higer in the shoulder (that doesnt matter at all) but you will still hit them bang on out to 250-275 odd without even having to think about it. A zero dead on at 90M is quite limiting in my opinion.Quote:

I am using hornady 139gr interlock sp though,
Even bush hunting, I've always zeroed my rifles at 200 yards. GWH covered it pretty well. Most scopes are 1/4" per click and that also has to be taken in to consideration if trying to zero a rifle on a target that's set on a range that is 100m or more which many are.
I can take good advice, so noted, thanks. Finding somewhere to zero at 200 metre might be a little more tricky for me.
If your scope is decent and 1/4in click adjusting @ 100m you should just have to move it 8 clicks up and you will be 2in higher than now,good to go.
