Ex yuppie looking to get shooting in Wairarapa

Hi to all. Hope you are all off to a good start in 2020.

I've just moved to Wairarapa this month. Have FA licence and bought a .22 cal air rifle for a laugh but have decided it's time to get some real guns. Can't decide between CZ 455, Ruger 10/22 and Marlin XT-22 for rabbits and possums.
Price is a factor, thus no Tikka or other more pricey guns. I reckon the Marlin should be OK value for money going by the reviews I've read? Looking to do some duck shooting a bit later too. Not sure about deer etc yet, but definitely want a shotgun for clay targets and duck hunts.

Used to be a city boy, have traded up that life for a house with my young family in the Wairarapa to grow some food, do some fishing and shooting, get back to basics and put some roots down.
I really really really am starting from basics, haven't done any hunting etc before, so hope to get together with some kind folks who know what they are doing and wouldn't mind having a rookie around.

I'm looking forward to what I'm going to learn from the forums.

    Cheers

Welcome, the rapa is a pretty good place to be for what you're wanting to do.

All the best for your new life.

    Hot barrels and tight lines.

    Welcome to the forum

For what it's worth, if you end up with a Ruger I found after trialling lots of different ammo it liked being fed CCI - I use subsonics mostly.

There's a pistol range opp the Gladstone pub and Collings and Bradey in Costley St in CTN

If you want a good grounding in the basics I can really recommend the HUNTS course run by your local deerstalkers - I know the local one here in the Hutt is good and someone closer to the Wairarapa one should be along soon to help with how their one is run - it's not all kids doing it, plenty of adults who want to learn

You can find the manual to the course in the usual places

If you want to learn Deerstalking then the books by Lentle and Saxon are great

Good luck and pester us with questions, plenty of know-it-alls here who love giving advice

    Cheers folks. Much appreciated.

308 - Def keen on pistol shooting as a sport but feel put off by the NZP making it so expensive and troublesome to maintain a B licence.
A great shame, seems like a good sport but it'd be tough to justify for a family fella broke for money and time!

Welcome to the forum hope you enjoy.
If you are starting of shooting stick to a bolt action and if you are wanting to save some dollars nothing wrong with a norinco .22

    Welcome to the forum.

Whatever 22 you get, spend as much quality time with it as possible. You can learn a great deal from using a 22 that will serve you well later.

    Welcome.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

It's 12 visits in 12 months. If you can't be arsed to do that you probably should not be around pistols....

Yes, I read his post and even quoted the whole thing...

It is a SINGLE visit per month, for a couple of hours. I don't think that is "expensive" or "troublesome".

It is a common complaint from a small minority of people about the requirements for gaining and maintaining a B-endorsment. Pistol NZ is probably one of the better run national shooting organizations - I've been part of I think 5 or 6 national shooting bodies at some stage... The model created by PNZ has some real benefits - it is well thought of by the police, and above all it creates a framework for the clubs to vet potential members. There are several people out there who simply never get beyond the probationary stage - for very good reason...

P.S. Gladstone is a great club to join. You will get exposed to a very wide variety of shooting sports.

    They have active sections for:

    IPSC
    Cowboy Action
    Sporting Clays
    Service Rifle

Every now and then we also do:

    Rimfire PRS
    300yds on electronic target

And the guys are friendly and very accommodating of new members - just ask and you will soon find someone who will let you try any of the codes you want to have a go at...

When u haven’t got much spare to play with, it starts to add up. I believe pistol club shooting suits certain parts of your lives better than others. I used to be a member, throughly enjoyed it. Stopped it as I was moving around too much at that point in my life. Would love to take it up again but cost is the biggest factor, followed by time. It’s a reality I live with and deal with. No complaints here.
