    Hello

New member and prospective firearms owner here. Looking for a new hobby as I get older beyond computers and low n slow BBQ. Applied for my licence a few weeks ago. Hoping to get it within the next couple of months, but will take a philosophical view if I need to wait. Seems to be a bit of a backlog at the moment, and the firearms safety courses near me seem quite booked up.

Very keen to get into non-competitive target shooting as well as plinking and controlling a rabbit plague on a family member's Manawatu farm. I ran across this forum while researching 22lr rifles. There seems to be a nice active community here which I hope can help with advice and stupid newbie questions in the future!

    Welcome along.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

    Welcome.

If you want to see fullbore (outdoor) target shooting in your area visit the Cheltenham Rifle Club

Great people who will offer useful advice and useful answers to those who ask and listen.
You don't have to be a competitive target shooter.

Hi, you be a lot older when the vetting & licence comes thru. Just had my vetting for renewal (speed things up-stick to household and local area referees all done same day as vetting person likes to do a bunch of people in one location for multiple applications at one time otherwise you may have to wait until there is enough applicants in your area till vetter visits again), took three weeks to get this far and was told it will take 2 months or more before receiving actual printed licence card. Mean while I can still hunt and shoot when current licence expires as will be logged into the system from the day after vetting that renewal is in progress. Just cannot sell or buy any firearms, ammo etc until printed licence arrives.

Was also told that new applications are on the back burner, renewals processed first as they come in constantly pushing new applications to the back of the pile.
