    Hello from Sheffield

    Evening all,

Great to finally join the forum (have been meaning to for a while). I’m over in the UK and have been shooting and hunting for many years. My particular interests are deer stalking, long range precision and reloading - rifles from .22LR to .50BMG

Hope to one day make it over and possibly relocate with my family. Will try and soak up as much as possible prior to that from you all about shooting and hunting in New Zealand. Thanks!

You could move to Sheffield, Canterbury, New Zealand and it might make the transition easier.
Also handy to lots of good hunting

Welcome. Never realised sport shooting was as popular as it is in the UK. Got a mate living in the UK and hes big on hunting and PRS shooting - he recently got the opertunity to hunt Roe deer and managed to bag a good buck.

Thank you. Yes it’s pretty popular to be fair although the wider public are relatively shielded. The deer population is steadily increasing but as there’s no public land it’s a question of establishing permissions or joining a syndicate (if you’re lucky!). It’s Roe buck season at the moment, was out recently and got a couple of 6 pointers.

Welcome. I watch a few videos of hunting in the UK & a lot are saying deer numbers are on the increase. However I only see stags & bucks being shot. You need to be shooting the females to have an effect on herd size.

Thanks! I suppose everyone wants to show off a nice head on their hunting video… The reality is plenty of female numbers are shot in the doe season, I’ll be back on them this Autumn. I definitely shoot more Does than Bucks. Land access is the biggest issue, too few shooters have too much land and not doing enough to control the numbers.

    Welcome to the forum @Jagged77

I grew up in Hathersage just outside Sheffield and moved over to Christchurch in the South Island about 15 years ago.

Spent a lot of time hunting, fishing and doing pest control around the Hope Valley and Sheffield area.
    Great part of the UK.

Welcome, moved here about 23 years ago, never regretted it. It is a topsy turvy place mind "southerners" as you and I know them live on the North Island, the South Island is where it's at

Small world! I know Hathersage extremely well, I grew up in Baslow. Did you go to Lady Manners? I was also in Edale Mountain Rescue Team for years so there’s a good chance you might have seen me rattling a collection can outside the petrol station on a Bank Holiday! Might need to pick your brains about moving over at some point.

South Island sounds amazing, we have friends in Dunedin.
