    Hello from Whangarei

New member here, based in Whangarei.

Getting back in to shooting/hunting after a long break. Just bought a CZ 452 .22LR and will be doing small game hunting/pest control until I get back in to the swing of things, then maybe bigger and better things. Also a keen angler.

    Great forum

    Welcome MightyBoosh.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

Thanks. It really is a very nice gun. Just waiting on scope to arrive in the post and I'm good to go.

Welcome. Got a 452 long barrel version. Put a Timney trigger in it and it's a cracker .22.

Had a play today using CCI Mini-Mags.

Zeroing was fairly straightforward. Typical 5 shot grouping at 50 metres with rifle rest and scope on 9x. Bullseye is 1 cm, next circle is 3 cm. Couldn't get it any tighter. Don't know if it was me, the rifle or the rounds. In reality, these groupings will be fine for my needs, I'll need to put some work in for longer range shots though.

Back out on the "range" today. Got through 100 rounds, easy done. Using subsonics now. Such a difference, noticeably quieter than my friend's air rifle!

Getting reasonable groupings at 70 metres using a front rest. I was surprised how much extra elevation was required at 70 metres versus 50 metres. Either that, or it was a difference between the supersonic rounds and the subsonics, don't know.

After re-zeroing, was hitting a 2 inch metal disc time with every shot which was quite satisfying!

Believe it or not, a magpie was daft enough to land in the adjacent paddock - first blood to the CZ!!!

    Nice.
I zeroed my subsonic 22 at twenty metres and it comes back to zero around sixty so I just aim straight at it out to around seventy

    Sent from my workbench
If i could have a full time job shooting pests i'm up for over time.

So it's the "mid-ranges" that have a different zero? Can you explain how that works to a beginner? Cheers.

The projectile initially rises in its trajectory from the barrel and then falls in its trajectory as the force of gravity takes effect across distance travelled. Therefore there are two points (one on the rise and one on the fall) where the projectile is at the same level.

Thanks, that's very well explained. I knew about the fall, but not the rise!

the rise is created by the initial aim point. if you hold a rifle barrel perfectly level and fire it there will be no rise, just drop.
The scope sits above the barrel, the scope always looks straight and the bullet has a curved trajectory. so to zero at any distance the bullet has to come up to meet the scopes level as the scope is above the barrel.
with the speed of a 22 sub, the co-efficent etc zeroing at 20 is pretty useful. with something much faster like a 223 zeroing at 200m will give you something like an inch high at 100m so you know it's a point and shoot out to there.
    hope that makes sense.
