Thread: introduction from Wellington

heya,

I'm pretty new to hunting and shooting, originally from Germany, where the firearm laws are *much* more restrictive than here and attaining a hunting license is very expensive, my godfather had a bit of land in a forest with a couple fish ponds where he taught me fishing and gutting when I was 5 and let me shoot his 22 rifles.

We came here over 6 years ago with one kid and 3 suitcases. Now, 2 kids, a dog, 15 chickens, 6 sheep and a horse later, we bought a live style block 2 years a ago, and with the sheep and the chickens came lots of bunnies. That's how I decided to apply for a license.
Right before the first lockdown. Still, only about 6 months later I had my license in hand and was ready to get a little 22 for the bunnies and a 308 for deer. Knocking off bunnies is more a chore, but hunting some venison is amazing. I had absolutely no luck during the roar this year when tried the southern Tararuas, walking in via Puffer Saddle about 4 times, but had shot a nice fat hind earlier this year and a young stag the year before. So I had plenty opportunities to work on my venison recipes and flesh & tan my first hide.
Wouldn't mind filling the freezer again some time soon, probably trying Akatarawa forest, once it's open for hunting again.

I enjoy cooking, bread making, beer and various Whiskies and think long walks on the beach are the most boring thing ever. I'd pick the forest over the beach any day.

Welcome to this rag tag bunch of good buggers Phil. Be warned that some are a bit rambunctious, some will take the piss and some will take an opposing view out of sheer argumentative bloody mindedness but by and large a better assembly of good bastards you would be pretty hard pressed to find.

welcome Phil. Just check what areas have had 1080 first to save yourself a trip. Plenty of deer in the Southern Tararua's that's for sure.

ah no: I just consume. I would never have the patience to wait 5 or even 10 years for a Whisk(e)y to age

sadly the council is using brodifacoum in the reserve right next to our property. I don't want to risk it.
