Red face Moving back to NZ. hello!

gday to you all! you can call me redgie. I'm moving back to NZ around mid January 2014. Moving back here to finish school. I will be staying in Wellington or Lower Hutt area. Currently i'm in the US and while i'm here i've gotten into the gun culture. I never gotten into hunting in the US but i would like to get into hunting when i move back in NZ. I'm also trying to do all sorts of other outdoor stuff(bike, hiking, camping, fishing).

I'm thinking of importing a rifle or two when i move here but still debating. I read that i will need permit and house check before i get approval for import.
I'm still debating because i will be moving to a studio apartment so that might be a big nono.

    anywho, hellos to yall

Welcome aboard Redgie. Do you have a New Zealand Firearms license?
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

thanks! Yes i will be moving back permanently.
I do not have NZ firearms license. I did not apply because from the police.govt.nz website, they will need to arrange a house visit and interview. I do not have an address yet since i don't know where i'm living yet.

Not having your NZ FAL may add a layer of complexity to importing. Come back, get FAL, import would be a path of lesser resistance in my opinion.

I'm currently in Rotorua for vacation until december 3rd. I am staying at my sisters/brother in law's rental house. I don't want to use their house because they have a 2 year old kid, and they're kind of anti guns.... So i currently hit a roadblock in getting license until i come back here next year, move to Wellington, find an apartment, only then i will have a permanent address. But then i'd have to hire a special shipping service to get the firearm(s) shipped since i can't bring them with me on january without license. ay yay yay such troubles.

Might be worth going to have a chat with the Arms Officer at the local Police Station. Explain your circumstances to him and he may have a way to navigate around that. Technically I do not see the need to have a safe ( for example) if you do not yet own any firearms.

Could you try appying for a temp licence / tourist licence ? - a freind has recently applyed for one of these as hes a kiwi living as a resident of canada - his NZGL recently expired and hes coming home for a month to do some hunting with me, he got a tourist licence to bring in his Sako 308 which he intends to leave in NZ with his old man - this cost him $25 from the NZ police website you have to notify where the gun will be stored and for how long.......so you may need to do this via agun club or another mate with a safe etc

I had another mate from Montana come out for his first NZ roar this year and he did the same albeit he was here for a month and took the rifle back, Just a thought - good luck & safe travels

So are you popping back to the states before settling in to Wellie?
If so can we all send you our shopping lists for you to bring back with you?

As I started reading this is what came to my mind too.

Why not simply go through a hunting store over here...lots less hassle...what would you be bringing in?

thanks for the great advice you guys! i noted down the temp/tourist license. Sounds like a very good topic i could bring up with welly police.

Yissir I'm heading back to seattle for christmas/new year. Get rid of all my stuff during time im there, then back to Wellington(or Rotorua for temporary stay).

whats you'r shopping list? I'm intending to trade my .308AR for a remmington 700 aics so i dont have to worry about MSSA. i sure will miss the fun factor of AR's and AK's
Is it worth importing a Mosin Nagant M44 to NZ? I love M44, hella accurate and its a classic

ah yes here's what im left off and maybe you guys can help which ones allowed which ones not. The AK and 1911 i already think will be a problem since they're semi-auto and can accept high cap mag. what's capacity limit for NZ? it does not specify on the police website

remmington 700 in .308win bolt action
Mosin Nagant M44 (curio, over 50yrs old) bolt action
    mossberg 590a(7+1 rounds) pump action
    springfield Loaded 1911 (7+1 rounds)
    Yugo AK underfolder
