Hey there
Im new to the forum and have never really asked these kind of questions. I’m looking at buying a 300 win mag and I’m just wondering if it’s the kind of rifle that you can run a 20” barrel on? Or of this is something that needs to stay long to get the speeds needed to make it worth having a win mag?

It's always a compromise but there are plenty out there using short barreled magnums to good effect.

Get a 300wsm for this purpose. Its almost got the same performance as a WM but more efficient on powder and a bit less recoil. Lots of people run 300wsms with short barrels even down to 18”. You lose about 25fps per inch which isn’t too bad compared to smaller cals. A 20” 300wsm is still a hell of a lot more grunty than a 20” 308.
I dunno how much shooting you’ve done but 300 magnums are a pretty nasty starter gun.
