Theres some great hunting opportunities in the area , head up the river few doc blocks up there not sure how safe the parking is without a local as they have a tire slashing system but things could have changed... when i first went up there early 2000 I spotted a shearing crew so pulled over jumped the gate & introduced myself boys where only too happy to have a break on the handpiece , i spent most of the day shearing but after that the next 2 or 3 weeks up there was awesome shot plenty of deer & a few pigs both 2 & 4 legged , had to toss my hunting boots on the roof of the hut a couple of times so no one flogged them or other "assorted equipment" got pretty wild up there once the beers came out , Good Times...

There's plenty of deer around the Mangapurua Trig area. The bush all around the Waipapa Stream catchment and the unnamed stream further to the west that joins the Waipapa are overrun.
