    Wellington Based

    G'day all,

Long time first time etc. I'm Push, originally from the deep deep south but now based in Wellington. Grew up hunting and fishing and recently have enough freedom to indulge both of them again. Joined the local NZDA branch and currently in the process of spending way too much time on topo maps/doing those unsuccessful walks with a rifle that come along with hunting new country.

Its been 45 years since I lived in Wellington but I enjoyed its hunting challenges, and theres a lot more deer about now. Welcome.

    Hi Push,

I moved up from Northern Southland some 5 years ago, and can confirm it is a wee bit different hunting up here, mainly because there are more people about, more tracks to get about on and more huts to stay the night in, and less reliance on 4wds to cut down the distance to your hunting spots. I will probably bump into you at club night next week. Flick me a PM and can talk you through some places to go look for a deer handy to Wellington.

    Cheers.

    Kia ora PushaV

I'm a new forum member and new hunter in Wellington.I've joined the Wellington NZDA and am doing their HUNTS course starting this month. I've got my FAL, a rifle and some tramping experience in the local area. I have also spent alot of time looking over topo mats and share your concerns that alot of easily accesible areas have a high level of tramping traffic. I'm keen to touch base and have a korero/plan a hunt/research local areas if you are keen (I have a few spots I've been looking into). I've been to a few club nights (this week for example), but missed the one before that due to sickness. I'm not sure if there is a direct message function on the forum as I only joined today, but reach out if you are interested.

Hi Rowan! I've since had some success, and happy to share what's been useful for me. Tramping tracks are quite often very low-density and well maintained. They serve the purpose of getting you deep enough into the hunting areas then it's on you to get far enough away to be safe.

Making sure you're in legal hunting areas well before first light will be useful for hunting purposes and avoiding the general public, but my experience with trampers etc has been positive. I usually have 2 topo maps and google earth up when I'm planning, and check the wind forecast.

Biggest tip is, once you find somewhere with sign and good deer food, keep going back until you know it like the back of your hand. It's tempting to get skunked and decide to head somewhere new, but you'll probably just get skunked again just somewhere new

Awesome that you had some success! I’ve just wrapped up the HUNTS course and have a few areas I am keen to try out… I can’t seem to access the direct message function in the forum so feel free to drop me a message or call on my cell # 0211309829 or on whatsapp if your keen to share some ideas.
