I'm sitting here thinking about purchasing a video camera...it is a veritable minefield out there...I do not want a mega-dollar one, just one to record the odd shooting sortie with the dogs...I would very much appreciate any advice...

GoPro may not be the way to go for what you're after. You're welcome to use mine to take a look at how they perform. Very close action stuff they're perfect. Anything over 5-10m and all detail is lost.
All the high resolution 1080P and 4K stuff also needs some decent storage capacity on both SD cards and your PC/Mac, plus some grunty processing ability if your wanting to do anything with it.
Like KJ said, if any kind of range is required you then have to go to narrow mode and lose field of view.
However if your shooting with your dog's flushing pheasants and retrieving ducks etc a go pro with dog harness would make for some awesome footage

I have spent many hours trying to get good footage of duck and geese, with several different cameras, the gopro is a waste of time for anything further that 5m or so, perhaps less, at 20m any bird is nothing more that a black dot against a big sky, If decoying in birds I use a DSLR mounted on a tripod, and partly zoomed, of course this means tht it is not always filming were the birds are flying, but sometimes it all works out,
I tried a sureshot, or proshot camera,( don't remember,) mounted on shotgun, worked ok, but fell to bits with in a couple trips.
going to try for a light weight DSLR, mounted on a hardhat next.
Thank you, Guys, so appreciate your comments...answered my questions!!! thank you...I know you all would have had moments when a video of your dogs' wondrous works would be so neat to capture...obviously I would need to spend much more than I was thinking...maybe not this bird season...thank you all again...:)
@EeeBees
Here's an example of some video from my Go Pro.
The Camera was mounted on the side of my Shotgun with the mount held on by the magazine cap.
As can be seen the Subjects need to be close to the Camera or the get lost in the Panorama of the scene.

That said I'd be keen to mount one so as to get a Dogs eye view.
Cheers

Cool video, @P38...thank you Pete I can see what you all mean...hmmmmmmm!!! The vid looks really neat and sharp but yes, the subjects of interest are lost...!!! Yes, one mounted on a dog pack would be great...interesting to see the surrounds from the dogs point of view...
