They were eating the heads off them, going one to the next all the way up the gully. Ran into them on my way back to camp and got a video of them having a scrap from 25m away.

Yeah there was a bit of hee-haw and single calling when this was taken in early March which is very early!
as Mickey Duck said it was an organised cull of pukeko on an Island of Auckland ( Motutapu ?? ) - run by DOC using NZDA volunteers - they were told to only shoot birds in flight ( Takahe cant fly) so there could be no confusion although the size difference is like a rooster to a turkey - well one shooter ignored that rule and one I think Takahe was shot ( I believe just one ) - not a lot of people know that many years before this during a Takahe survey in Fiordland a Wildlife Officers German shorthair dog killed one -
