Was just about to suggest the HDPE pond liner material. It's really useful for all sorts of oddball things...
With the staples, last time I grabbed them with some really fine needle nose pliers and heated them up red hot and then waited until the red had faded away. Sort of a minor heat treat adjustment? Then dropped them onto the part and they settled right into place. A quick wipe over with an old flathead screwdriver warmed up and the staples were fully covered and not visible - what I did then was open the crack up carefully until it was a V the entire length and then laid some black material in it and melted it again with the flathead. I used some filler that smoked the same when heated, it might not have been fully right but it was compatible. Apart from the line down the crack you could never tell it was not made like that.
What you've done there is perfectly fine though, just a little more labour to get the same result I would think.
