Brownells: new ITAR rules

I ordered an $89 Mauser barrel from Brownells yesterday.

Overnight I got an email telling me I had to do the $250 ITAR paperwork for it.

It used to be that if the item was below $100 the paperwork wasn't needed. I've brought most of an AR into the country that way.

But now they say ANY rifle part needs a certificate regardless of price.

Well there goes that convenience.. might have to do more group buys from now on?

Sorry mate but is not true that all parts under $100 could be exported , and has always been like this, certain parts have always required export approval. This is as far back as 2001 when i started buying from them.

All that has changed is they now charge a fixed fee for the "export processing" it used to be 3% of the order value or about $20 which ever was the greater value.

Actions, Barrels etc. Lower recievers for ARs need paperwork to get them out for example but upper receivers do not as long as they are under 100 dollars

Just a fact of life I'm afraid, at least they will still export i'm sure they don't really need to anymore

Rifle stocks under $100 was where the confusion comes from.

Thanks for the clarification. I brought an AR barrel in last year without US paperwork, but maybe I got lucky with that one.

FAAA which barrel @YosemiteSam ? They must have made a stuff up as they tell me ALL rifled barrels need paperwork. It is only Shotgun barrels that get out.

I am keen to do an order for a couple of barrels including a criterion AR15 barrel. BTW for barrels you only need a letter from your AO explaining that there is no need for an import permit for barrels to New Zealand. You send this letter to Brownells with your other ITAR paperwork so they can apply. If we got 5 it would be $50 a barrel + shipping + GST.

I thought uppers needed a permit to export aswell?
