Lightbulb Building what I want over time criteria, 308, 1000yds, palma

    While I like 22LR I find I like 308 even more....doh...big holes pretty

I cant afford to go out and buy a Plama rifle straight off (at least $3k? ) So Im wondering what options there are in NZ and for me.

Say buy a "basic" gun say very good for 500~600 yds that could be upgraded over time, what donors are there?

or keep an eye out for a second hand palma knowing Im going to need a new barrel soonish?

or I guess it maybe just better to sit and save meanwhile use club guns?

Im trying to determine a way forward, so Im looking for help from others with experience along these lines....help greatly appreciated!

BTW I dont know any gunsmiths in Wellington....who are about?

Are you going to do target competitions then ?

Or are you after a rifle that you can shoot lots at range without burning out the barrel?

Mitch Maxbury if hes still around will be your man. $3K should buy you a good scope.
Keep your eyes open on Trade Me for a second hand shooter.
There will be heaps of cheap Geovids coming online soon too .

interesting thread, keen to see what replies you get

for long-range smiths, two that always seem to get recommendations are:

    Scott Trail, SSR, Featherston or Carterton ? 027 579 1047, ssrnz@xtra.co.nz

Mitch Maxbury, somewhere in Lower Hutt, 04 565 3855

@leathel for target shooting, so bolt action.

I guess I cant get a jack of all trades as it wouldnt be a master of one and 308 at 1000 yds is a big ask from what I can read. If say if I want to go shooting something breathing a CZ or tikka T3 at about $1500 ish isnt going to break the bank. Otherwise I wondered on a Remmington 700 and high quality re-barrel later, hence wondering what gunshiths there are about.

mainly I thought I'd ask as earlier I looked at a Savage Palma M12 but thats $3100 plus bits say a decent scope is $2k ish....so we are at $5k+ as a one off, way past my budget.

@ebf, yes I hope so....the idea is to plan my year ahead so I need to know how much I have to save to get me to a starting point that gets me to the end point, if that makes sense.

    :]

@kiwijames yes I was thinking that as one possibility, Im watching trademe for "palma" nothing yet, kind of thinking it will be rare, host shooters in NZ seem to shoot furry things.

NB reason I said palma was to give bias to that class of gun and 308 caliber (reason its cheap, and effective if i want to use the ammo in a furry thing killer. So when my eyes get too old I can pop a scope on it and still blast things, or run with both.....I love scopes.

So I have no real interest in semi-autos for instance.

T3 re-barrel with Tru-Flite is always an option

What's nice about F-Class Open is you can start competing using a hunting rig, and also shoot NZDA long-range comps - best of both worlds ?

.308 Lakelander Target Rifle | Trade Me

interesting rifle.... need to be tapped for front mounts and not to cheap... Will be cheaper but nice looking. I don't know much about them

Plenty of new barrels around in people cupboards that turn up occasionally, I have one new and one used 1:13 twist barrel (palma match barrels for the 155 palma pill) but not looking at selling them ATM

the odd nice Omark rifle turnes up too at cheaper prices

Cheap old Rem 700's are getting hard to get now though but you can pic up custom ones at respectable prices

@ebf I was thinking that might be a plan (F class open). I do like the T3, not too badly priced. I think I could get that and work up to a decent shot, by then justify a better barrel.

    @leathel, thanks for the ideas.

Also this looks interesting as a bit of history,

    6.5x55 CG80 Target rifle | Trade Me

700's, yes but it seems a very popular setup.

Thanks for being good sounding boards
