Thread: Epoxy for Plastic

I have a couple of plastic parts I wish to make grippier
Couple of plastic rifle magazines and a plastic pistol grip
I would like to use a epoxy resin to glue silicon carbide or aluminium oxide to the taped off areas
Has anyone done this and had success with any particular glue?
Araldite?
I have some pieces to practice on first
I have had the grips on two of my sti pistol grips previously done by a great pistol smith
Was just keen to give a couple projects a go myself this time

Grip tape? Non permanent.

Yeah, but in a nice way nah
I really want permanent
Some of the fiddley ness with grip tape would be over come, especially with 90° inwards and outwards bends.
High temp can make grip tape sticky and move, as can some cleaning agents
I COULD achieve a lot nicer finish if I could put 'glue' right up to the edges then apply the grit
So longs as I do my bit?

Ask Jason @ Senator Stocks. He has a product (like truck bed liner) that he is currently applying to his stocks. He could probably do this for you.

I am going to use something like this. It has an orange peel like finish with some bits of grit in it too.

There is a marine product used on yachts that is epoxy based. You paint it on with a good thick coat, then wait 5 minutes and roll with a very course roller (supplied as part of the kit) which raises the texture. If you've ever been on a yacht then you'll know the textured anti-slip finish I'm talking about?

I've got a tin of it in the shed if you need me to look up the brand/name. If you're in the Waikato you can use some of mine if you want?

you actual buff down very carefully/finely the checkering slightly before the process, otherwise it all ends up too fat

I used to shoot Action pistol with a .38super 1911 Colt Government S/S race pistol (wings, mover base, aimpoint, compensator, extended mag well, etc etc...), I just used an old set of wooden grips painted black with skateboard grip tape wrapped around them. Looked just like your photo and it never came off.

If you used epoxy resin it should do what you're after, you could either mix in the silica first or add it to the epoxy afterwards? A little trial and error on a bit of scrap and I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Would it be implied that it is a 2 pot solution?

Any product will do, but I'd be looking at the marine based ones for durability and yes they are all 2-pot mixes. Its the same stuff you can use as bedding compound in rifles, so it can take impulse loads like a gun-shot will produce.

Not most epoxy resins are clear (no colour) but you can buy tinter in any colour you want i.e black!

You may have to do a little trial and error testing, but you'll figure it out.
