    Floating Long Line Reel

With wanting to set a long line from the kayak I'd been on the lookout for a suitable reel. Everyone seems to want to sell the electric fence reels which are fairly strong and certainly cheap and effective enough. I was thinking that I'm likely at arse out a few times and there was every likelihood that the reel would go overboard at some stage and I'm not that keen on a couple of hundred bucks worth of gear sinking so I figured I'd make my own reel.

So it has been out with some old school tools for a couple of hours over a couple of well spread out days. Using a hand plane I knocked 22.5o off each short side of some very old dry third hand ex 100x50 (93x46) framing timber.

This afternoon it was time to finish the planing. The top was divided into 3 and the outside 1/3rds planed down to 15o. Then the length of timber was cut into 8 pieces 125mm long. A bit of a jig was knocked up to hold all the pieces in place for gluing since I'm not a squid. The timber was dampened along the edges and polyurethane glue added and all the pieces arranged back together and bound up to set.

The void will be filled with polystyrene and a timber centre added when the sides are glued and screwed on. Will need to work out some sort of ratchet system and a holder.
