Got the new 280 Ack home with me now!!

Now i have picked up the 280 Ackley from Chris (UKgunworks built the rifle ) i thought i would play with the load a bit to see if can Tune it a bit more!!
I have loaded the 162 A-maxs to kiss the lands , i am using Reloader 22 and dropped the charge to 58.5 grains then 59.0 / 59.5 and 60 grains!!
Took the chrono to the range with me as well so i could see where the accuracy nodes are too!!
There are two accuracy nodes , 59 grains which is averaging 2961fps and a ES of 11.. / 60 grains with a average velocity of 3023 and a ES of 12...
With the testing done i went home and relaoded 20 rounds of the 60 grain load..
My mate Chris and myself went to the local farm that we shoot and got set up!!
A crow was the first thing at 698yds , i dailed in the data and fired / the shot landed 2 inches above the crow!!
Later on i had a shot at a bunnie at 945yds , shot was spot on for height but the wind caught me and the round landed 12 inches to the left!!
As the evening wore on i thought i woud test the load on a 6 inch turf some 995yds away!!!
Good safe shot and backstop , so i readied myself for the shot .
I made the correctons for shot and fired , the round landed a minute high and a half minute left!!
I made no corrections as i wanted to fire a group!! , i fired another 2 rounds and Chris said they was landing all but the same place :)
I let the barrel cool , made the necesary corrections and fired - first round spot on , next round fired was spot on , third round was spot on!! :) :)
I let Chris have a go , he got set up behind the rifle and i gave him the " all clear " to shoot , his first round was spot on and his second hit the turf around 3 oclock some 3 inches from centre!! :) :)
Its sure looking promising and the next thing for me to do is load the 2 accuracy node loads and test them at 500 and 1000yds on paper or a gong good to see which shows the best!!

The barrel is a Border cut made here in England!!!

Got to be happy with those results. Those are some very good speeds. What length is the barrel and what suppressor is that?

Yes its a Sako 75 long action
Mcmillan Sako varmint stock
UKgunworks tactical bolt knob / action screws and recoil lug
Border cut barrel finished at 26 inches with a 1 in 8.5 twist / 280 Ackley.
Moderator is a Ase Ultra compact

I dont think crows&bunnies willbe hanging about in your neck of the woods,especially with that machine .Id be F..n off sharpish too if something whizzed past me at that ratew.not good for your health im told:wtfsmilie:

N165. Iv loaded a lot of N560 for others which can be a bit faster. 2217 can be ok as well but it can be a bit of a squeeze getting enough in sometimes

I am leaning towards the .280 AI for my next project. I wont be using 162's tho.

plenty of options but if you want to push the range a bit its hard to think of a better match. Im guessing youve got the 150 sirocco in mind?

Yep, I reckon they will be sweet for animals as far as I am happy too shoot and I could use Amax's on steel and paper. I am not sure if I trust the A max that fast, up close on a stag if I have to body shoot.

I am hoping to get out to Christen my rifle on the Reds next weekend - if i have any luck i will let you fellas know how them 162s perform!;)
I have shot Roe and Red with my 6.5-55 improved and 123 A-maxs and had great results as i did with the 6.5-284 and 140 A-maxs ( when i owned one ) .
Thanks to forums like this i was able to get some info on what powder to use when testing me new 280 Ack - hence trying Reloader 22 first!!

Nice. I have 5 sciroccos loaded for the roar. If I fire one I should be pretty happy. Got a heap of A max for the chams and any long shots.

Shoot a few big reds inside 30yrds, in the Shoulder/body and let me know how they go.

Ah you lads must have some tight bush where you are!!
Shots here are usually around 70yds and out form there - given the chance that is!!

In my experience, the average shot I get in the bush is between 10-30 yrds.
I havent experienced it myself, but have heard the Amax can be a bit explosive, near muzzle velocity up close. Even on clean shots. I am not keen to risk it so rather use a soft point or bonded projectile I know works in close.

Iv had that with the 168 in 30cal.
Barnes in top of mag at all times now even on tops, longer shot flick it out and chamber amax.

Yes Border barrels are based in Scotland!!!
