Great to teach an enthusiastic youngster

I am currently helping a young lad learn a bit about Engineering so came up with this little support jack as a project to include a few interesting machined parts.

I just made one for me before he come over and we make another together for him, actually quite pleased how it turned out.

The idea is you use it to support items being machined and it included stepper blocks for various heights with the screw thread to give finer adjustment.

UPDATE... The lad came round today and it was great, to cut a long story short we made another jack together and even added a few embellishments in his to introduce a few extra operations like knurling etc......You can see his on the right, he went home a happy lad with a shiny new toy :-)

Awesome! Not many opportunities for youngsters to work with precision kit like that. I'm slightly envious (and probably too old to learn new tricks!)

Very nice and well done for passing along some great skills.
I made one during my apprenticeship many years ago which has a 45 degree groove across the top which is handy when supporting shafts in the mill.

I thought that so put the 10mm hole in the top so he can make various shaped feet to locate on there, like you say a V shape would be good for round bar.

Now that makes even more sense than the design of my one. I have got a hole in the center also.

I seem to remember making something like that in High school..... quite a long time ago.

A very handy piece of gear, and next he'll need to make a small vise, then.......

Great effort teaching a young 'n those skills. Hopefully it'll capture his imagination for a career.

note: I still have my toolbox and torque wrench I made as an apprentice in the late 70's
