    Grinder dressing

    Ok guys

I inherited a twin wheel grinder that Ai plan on using for sharpening my lathe wood chisels and the odd bits and pieces. Looking for a dressing stone to tidy the wheels up as who knows what's been over those stones in the 15years that I know of it being in he woodshed.

Will try and take some pics later today as wonder if I'm needing news wheels. Had a quick look at trade me and discovered that for under $200 I could get a brand new one albeit lower wattage but with aluminium oxide wheels.

So folks, a source of dressing tools? And is it worth the trouble of changing wheels?

    Pictures to come

I bought a couple years ago for $10. Do the job well.

I didn't know what it was going to be but the title is all sorts of wrong.
It makes me think of the time I hacked into my cuzzies phone and changed his tinder settings to looking for guys and Swyped the half dozen cock gobblers that appeared. Took him a week to work out what was going on and he was telling me that all these dudes were cracking onto him through tinder, he couldn't work it out.

Cheers for the help, trust someone to find a dodgy innuendo to a completely innocent thread!

If it's a decent grinder, it'll be worth changing wheels. Particularly because you can then put some decent wheels on it for sharpening - such as white AlOx instead of the standard grey/brown AlOx.

I've used wheel dressers, single point diamond dressers, and ended up with this:

    T Bar Diamond wheel dresser

And +1 for AluOx (white) wheels. Running a 60-grit grey wheel for HSS, and a 80-grit white wheel for wood turning tools.

My grinder is all but redundant these days. I brought a linisher and use that for just about everything.

Most of the modern two wheel grinders come with wheels that are too"hard". By that I mean that the matrix which binds the all the bits together is designed to make sure the wheel doesn't wear too quickly. Consequently the wheel tends to clog up quicker and doesn't grind particularly well, but it lasts for years ! If you are going to be sharpening expensive good quality tool steel, you need the softer matrix as recommended by ebf and PaulNZ. These wear a bit quicker but expose fresh cutting edges on the matrix which make them more efficient at cutting the hard materials and you're not likely to burn the steel which is easy to do if you try and "force" the cheap hard wheels. The soft wheels are easier to dress as well, it takes a lot lighter force to get the wheel squared up. Just my 2c worth

its a lot like tires, the cheap nasty ones are shit AND they never wear out so you have to put up with them for ages!
