Kayak Fishing Bait Cage.

I've been getting up a couple of crab bucket nets to drop of the kayak this summer but couldn't find a suitable bait cage. All the shops I've seen have huge bait cages that are way to big and bulky for the kayak. After giving up on the shops I had a look round the garage and spotted a length of PVC downpipe and thought that might have some potential.

After a little thought I cut four lengths, then cut 1/3 out of the circumference down the length of the tube. Some heat from the hot air paint stripper to one of the slices taken out then squashed between a couple of pieces of timber gave me a flat section to cut out some rounds with a hole saw. A touch of PVC cement and they're starting to take shape.

Once dried I'll take to them with a drill and add a couple of shark clips to attach to the nets

I have no idea what I am looking at.

Basically the bit on the bottom of the picture will clip over the bit at the top to form a bait cage.

All should be revealed tomorrow night when it is dry and I've added a few holes.

It will have three lines of holes running along the top and bottom sections. The top section just clips/slides on and will hold the bait in. Shark clips attached to the ends will hold it in the net.

Is it to catch bait or dispense burly?

The good thing is no metal bits other than the shark clip to hook to the net and the plastic halves just clip together. The main thing I was after was something the right size for may application with deck space being at a premium from a kayak. Also simple to work with limited mobility on the water.

What sort of crabs do you hope to get? Paddle crabs?

That's what I'm aiming for. Something to do when I get to the beach and practice going out and coming back in through the surf. Make a trip of it. Can use the set up for crays too apparently, though I might make some folding pots for those. Another idea I've been toying with.
