Mauser 98 carbine
Have a little 98 carbine been playing with for a while, got to were I didn't like the Simons 50mm scope
So have ordered a pair of weaver rings to drop a 3-9x40 on it.
Silly question : Looks like a pretty serious cartridge .
How much does the 8x57 kick ,should I put a recoil pad on it?
Don't mind a bit of recoil but the butt plate looks very hard.
Expect some of you have experience & are knowledgeable about this caliber

Thanks for that muzza,
It has a custom sporting hard wood stock that came fitted with a hard plastic butt plate.Fore end needed to be shortened & some fitting done.
Barrel been turned down & re-crowned ,Warne bases fitted .

Re: Mauser 98 carbine
Cool caliber ive taken countless animals with one.
Can be loaded to compete with the 30/06 , most factory ammo is puss but the sellior and bellot stuffs not to bad. A recoil pad is a good idea it has a rep as a bit of a kicker.

Sounds neat Chris. I have been told they are more of a push than a shove but its all in the eye of the beholder. A recoil pad will always make an improvement from a hard plastic thing...

The unfinished project ,might be a good bush rifle I reckon

Should be a sweet shooter and a very good calibre too. No point being a hard-man, fit a limb saver to it and your shooting will improve, as the fastest way to develop poor form is to get a flinch from an uncomfortable stock.
Best of luck with your project.

As others have said not bad with factory ammo which is mild, bung a pad on it.

My G33/40 with 196 grain loads at 2450 FPS kicks a bit, but shoots just over MOA.

They not a bad looking rifle with a sporting stock added wiredkiwis but they all get a few battle scares if used.

Will post a pic of mine Chris ( currently on a road trip) has an 18" barrel 2.5-8 Zeiss and shoots 170 hotcore's into less than an inch (46 grns 2208) built on a VZ33 action with a custom walnut stock, recoil is next to nothing, I reckon a very underated calibre.

Hey Chris... that stock looks mint up close, post a couple more pics of it.
Not sure if this link is of interest gotavapen.se/gota/mats/marks_mauser_rifle.htm

Suppose it should look mint was a new stock that needed finishing after some fitting.
That link would be better if wasn't so many number etc on this ,don't know where to start.
And there more under the bases but pretty sure un-issued & made in 1943.Only had about 20 rounds threw it as far as I know .

Hey Chris.. thanks for that.. I thought the stock might have been the same as my one but it looks a bit thicker at the fore-grip..
Mine was purchased from a Dinney Collins in Wellington back in the late 80s... not sure if its locally made or not.
Fitted by the then owner .. Ali Wells - Katikati... thats who I purchased it from...(I wonder if anyone knows him?)
Cheers
