Mobile workbench/tool box

There are a few things in life that are never big enough...ummm yeah, well that too...

But other than wishing I was hung like Dirk Digler, a mobile workbench was pretty high up on the list. Something to store tools in, be able to roll around, and assemble stuff on top of. But at around $4000 to buy one, it only left two options for someone like me...make one, or go without.

So I'm making one:

Collection of 3 draw filing cabinets. I cut about 60mm off the total height of each one. It would have been way to high otherwise. Some were also 4 draws, this didn't matter as I just cut them down to match the size of the others.

Next was to mig weld all 5 cabinets together. I stich welded them around the edges. Then made up an angle iron base that it will sit in.

8 caster wheels were added to support the weight. Yes this is epic over engineering...but they are cheap, so I don't see any negatives in this.

I ran out of paint, so haven't done the draws yet. But will get onto this asap. I also need to make the bench top to go on top. Will post more pics as it happens.

That's a little funny, as we haven't had tv for about 3 year's now...and life is better without it.

It wheels beautifully! All the casters are the type with brakes, so it can also be locked if you want to have it fixed.

Just gotta get more paint to finish draws, and work out a bench top?

Looks just as good as one from repco and will probably last here times as long for half the price!

Pretty happy with it for the money. Basic cost breakdown:

Filing cabinets off Trademe total $70
Caters x8 total $106
Steel $50
Paint $77

Grand total $303

Not bad considering the cost of anything remotely similar is $3000 - $4000.

My brother makes kitchens, so the top is on order from his scrap pile. So it will be a freebie for me. But it's still useable as it for now:thumbsup:

do you find the filling cabinet drawers will not handle the weight dedicated roll boxes will especially if you put a heavy work top on them?

They're crazy strong. I have a drill sitting on top of a 2 draw filing cabinet. That drill must weight 150kg at least, and I stood on it myself when hanging the deer head above it...so that's 250kg on top of one little cabinet!

Clever concept @kimjon, looks awesome might have to borrow your idea for my new workshop..

The cabinets are width 495mm x 640mm deep. Can't remember height, but it ends up 1140mm with wheels, base and top. I'm 6' 5" tall so it's perfect for me height wise. But keep in mind standard bench height is normally 900mm, so it's a big beast!

The top I'm putting on it will have 30mm overhang all around, so final measurements will be 2530 length, 700mm deep, and 1140mm height.

You can change this up though by cutting more or less off the cabinets, and make it longer or shorter by the total number of cabinets used.

I'm just about to buy some filing cabinets (100+) and are already thinking about how to weight up the bids, in regard to workshop useablity......

I am really jealous off your work shop Kimjon, I have only half a double garage and with that lathe you should be knocking out rifle barrels. Stumpy, yer I gave John a sample of my first homebrew, it came out green and I was getting rid of it , a few weeks later he rang and said, "you won`t believe what's got bigger" :oh noes:, AArr, I `d poured it down the drain.

The way I see it you must be having some, what with kid`s go cart, Harley bike, new shed, you are really on the go. All I've done is make a new barrel for my Hawken plains rifle and guess what Ill be using to brown the barrel.
