Mounting deer heads

My workshop floor was starting to get piles of heads accumulating in odd places, due to procrastination.

Surprisingly after hours wasted on google, I find very little information on how to mount a deer head (European mount) to a wall or a shield?

Maybe its not that hard, but for me I struggled to get the heads to sit flat, so after a bit of trial and error I came up with the below:

Using a bandsaw I cut out this shape. It follows the roof of the mouth, then "pops" up into the neck joint.

Next was a rattle can matt black coat of paint.

I cut the back of the skull off with the bandsaw as well to gain access for a screw. There are subtler ways of doing this, but it was quick...so anything that saves time is good.

Some dodgy left handed drilling while snaping a pic on my phone. This will be where the main screw to hold it on will go. The weight of the head will naturally setlle it it the right position on the stand.

So that's it. Easy as that!

The workshop is a work in progress. I'm about half way there. I managed to put up more pegboard tonight, which was cool. It took some creative thinking to put up a whole sheet by myself...but it went up okay, and its even sitting level:thumbsup:

Is this what you were looking for. I do mine this way but just use a disposable wood saw from the builders merchant.
You need to be careful around the nostril bones as there fragile :O_O: do the cutting before the boil out.
I'd use your band saw but then that would make one hell of a mess of your nice clean workshop and we can't have blood and done splattered all over!:XD:

Yes none of my heads will win a beauty comp, but that ugly one is one of my favorites, as its actually a pure wapiti (shot in the North Island, farm escape in a area with no deer). He was an urban legend, occasionally been sighted like "big foot" or the fiordland moose!

There were actually 4 of them, but over a decade three out of four were shot. The fourth one was thought to be dead as it was at least 18 year's old.

One day a mate called me up and said he had heard a weird sound out the back of his farm in the Doc land behind. I thought it may just be the fourth wapiti, so didn't waste any time and got out there with a rifle. It took all day, with an early blundered attempt when he winded me, but that sighting keep me interested and eventually about 5 hours later I managed to track him down again and get him!

They look bloody great up there, mine are all stacked up in the rafters in the old mans shed. Maybe when I get my own kick arse looking shed like yours mate!

Most were head shot, so it wasn't an option for those ones unfortunately. But yes, sounds like a good way of doing it:thumbsup:
