    New barrel

Hi Guys, I am / have made a new barrel for my Hawken plains rifle, the first barrel was good with a patched round ball, 2" group at 50m, but the barrel had a tight spot six inches in from the muzzle and it was a pita to get a bullet in. So as I had a one meter length of round 1045 steel x 1" and all the add on bits to drill, ream, rifle , I thought give it a go and see if I could a better job, I used the new gun drill that I made the Sharps barrel with, so it is .457" bore and still a 1-33" left handed twist . The old barrel had the ramrod guide and tube soldered to it, so got them off and glued them on to the new barrel with J B Weld, fingers X, should stay put, not like it`s going to get hot with rapid fire. All I've got to do now is brown it and then a range shoot to see if it`s any good.

The J B weld, well I did not want to heat the barrel up to much and the J B has a strength of 3,930 psi when cured, so will see over time what happens. The gun will not get hot from firing, takes me a bit to get it loaded , definitely not rapid fire. And I`m not saying my barrels are good, they are only for lead bullets and the same for my Sharps, it will never see jacketed bullets, they would probably wear out going down the bore. Cheers, Hombrew.357.

So I can make black powder muzzle loading barrels ,round or octagonal from 1" or a bit bigger diameter steel, bore .445", cut rifling makes it .457". Now as they are only for black powder 1215 or 12L14 steel is ok and easier to machine, so any one want to go to the dark side and have go at making a Davey Crocket rifle, I can make the blank barrel.

So far all`s good, the barrel is now browned and on the rifle ready for a shoot out at the range to set the sights and see if it`s any good. I have had to make a new bullet mould for it as the bore is a bit bigger, but it`s ok for patched pound ball, just a thicker patch, I hope, fingers X.Name: P1020716.JPG
