Thread: New Barrel on the Hawken

Yep I`ve been beavering away making a new .45 barrel for my Hawken plains rifle using my new system , so hopping it will be a lot better one. Only time will tell, have cut the octagonal and milled the sight dove tails and now fitting the under barrel bar and ramrod guide . Then a clean up to get it ready for browning and when that's done it`s off to the range to set the sights and see how it shoots. So if I`m making barrels they have to be good, will keep you posted on results.

, .450" cut rifled to .470" six groves, 1-48" twist, should be good after 5,000 balls through it.

Hey Micky, Have you turned anything into pizza with the .45-70 shotty , hope she`s coming right for you. Will have to try 4140 with my new setup and maybe a new barrel for the Sharps , it`s going good but I can now do better and a right hand twist,

put lots of holes in hillside.....but not connected yet.... havent had her out for a while.plenty of time.

Have to do a bit of close up stalking Mickey, stick it in the earhole, should get results. All`s looking good, clamps of and the under bar is stuck on like stuff on a blanket. Fits in the stock nicely and the front and back sights just start to go into the dovetails, so a tap in should set them nice and tight. Just need to make it go rusty brown and makeup a new ramrod so I can spit some lead down range.

My one will be going chamois hunting in march when i have some mates out from Germany.
I got a stag, boar and bull tahr last year and now just need a chamois buck to complete the muzzleloader set

Way to go Akaroa, certainly a challenge with black powder in the ice and snow on the tops down there. Haven`t blooded any of mine yet, off the hills now and walking the dog is a challenge so will be killing paper most of the time. Hi Kotuku, don`t be to hard on poor old Stuey nasty, he`s found a good use for those bashed flat barrels, he`s making them into garden watering pipes, you get two squirts for your bang/buck, Now browning the barrel, takes about fore days.

Well it`s in the rusting stage at the mo, and it hasn't been near anyone's bum, just vinegar. Now will rub it down with wet cloth and a wash in baking soda to stop the rust. After that a hot rub down with lanolin to seal the surface, should look like it was made in 1868. May try to see if I can acid etch" Hawken plains rifle .45 cal " on it.

It`s now been rubbed down and washed with baking soda solution to stop the rust. I melted some lanolin, bees wax and added a bit of kero them wiped down the barrel and seal the surface. Refitted the sights and precision cap nipple, popped a few caps to make sure all was working, , so now it`s of the range to burn some powder and set the sights, It`s hard work, .

Well I didn't show all the machining ops, you have seen it all before, and speaking of projects taking shape how is the 45-70 one coming on. Will there be a project build coming up soon.

Range report, new barrel at the range , loaded up with 50gr 3f .440" ball and a pillow ticking patch, at 50m five shots three are touching!!, just a bit low so a bit of fine tuning should see it driving tacks. I`m a happy camper, not bad for a home made barrel, pic`s of the target, no, I shot it full of holes with my Sharps. , next time.
