    new look marlin 25n

I sold my 10/22 the other day have I have worked out I prefer a bolt action 22 for hunting just seems safer than a semi
the day after it sold @Toby listed this little marlin 25n and a 12ga as a combo deal for $300 which I thought was a good deal so I brought them

I've never had a camo stock before as ill be honest as say I don't like camo I thought they were plastic and not much I could do "but its only a bunny gun so didn't really care" didn't realize it was wood till it arrived so that was great I now can fuck the camo off and have a wood stock instead I prefer wood to plastic for rifle stocks so was stoked when I found it was wood

the stock has reassemble checkering on it and I didn't want to sand that off so I decided to use paint stripper after 3 coats and a little sand it was back to bare wood (unsure of type) but it looked dark ish in colour and was a pretty nice bit of wood not stunning but not bad (sorry forgot to take a photo after stripping)

for refinishing I chose to use haarlem danish oil I've used it on outdoor tables etc before and it looks awesome

I found an offcut of 4mm ply and screwed it to the stock using the butt plate holes to make it stand up so I didn't have to touch it to much
and I have just finished the 1st coat

3 coats so far the haarlem danish oil is doing a great job it tacks off nice and quick could probably could recoat after an hour but im waiting at least 4-6 to be safe were as linseed oil can be 2-3 days between coats at times im giving it a rub with 1000grt between coats and a rub with a TAC cloth to remove dust

starting to develop a slight sheen
not the best photo but yeah

7 coats now getting there I will do a couple more tomorrow only using very thin coats and lots of em IMO that's the best way to get a good finish with oil

id try one of those green scouring pads and water for a start check on the back of it first to make sure it doesn't scratch it up

It will shoot as good as it looks too

I always wondered what the wood would look like if I stripped off the paint. This is that point in time where I wish I done it instead of thinking about it haha

yeah I was kind of worried about the stock as I thought to myself they wouldn't paint the good ones.... this one is a 2nd as it has been taken close to where a branch has come out but I reckon that just adds to the character is structurally sound as it the grains are all running how they should be so that's why they chose to paint that one I reckon

I did that, factory finish was a plain dark finish, like really dark. Turns out it was cause the stock has bugger all grain but I might make it a bit darker at some stage.
