Pachmayr recoil pad questions

hi guys, i want to put one of these pads on my new shottie to lengthen the LOP and aid recoil

went on their site yesterday and couldn't believe how many models there where.....

straight to the point, the model im after (1" thick) is about 1/4" extra all around, is this too much to grind off?????

If it is a common type of shotgun limbsaver often make direct fit pads. No grinding

I have just fitted a limb saver on a Parker Hale and that would have had been less than 1/4 inch, about 3-4 mm from memory. Also did a Pachmayr a while back and there was about 3mm each side of the stock

The face of a Pachmayr pad that goes against the stock has a thin raised line moulded in. This line shows the size of the moulded-in steel insert. If that line is smaller than the end of the stock then it is safe to grind it to fit. The best grinding system is large diameter disc to which you glue emery sheets (like a shearing comb grinder). This allows you to keep your eye above the grind and keep the lines flowing nicely to the stock as you rotate the pad. Protect the stock with a layer of masking tape. With practice you can grind away the majority of the tape without touching the stock. I worked at the Pachmayr shop in LA in the late 1970's for a short time (I couldn't get a green card). Old Frank Pachmayr was still running the show in those days.

What Gundoc said. I made a jig to do mine and the pad is ground using the jig rather than being on the stock

@gundoc My shottie has a slight curve at the end of the stock that fits the curvature of the body, would i have to machine that flat, or do Pachmayr pads 'flex'?

The stock should be squared off. Most pads will crack the base if they are curved to fit. This is a good time to adjust the pitch angle so that you get maximum contact on your shoulder in your normal shooting position.
