A singleshot .22 to fit my boy

I have had a Slazenger .22 single shot in the safe for years, I got given it by a family friend 20 years ago, it wasn't the tidiest, and had an incomplete bolt.
I tidied it up and put it away thinking I will find a bolt for it one day. Sentimental value stopped me from dumping it.

Anyways as my boy has started having a go with my old single shot .22 we take away on camping trips etc. and doing pretty well with it I wanted to get him his own . I scored a little Gecado a while back but it turned out it is missing its ejector... (Might have that sorted yet)
Anyways leap forward to this weekend just been and we drop into the new local gun shop for a nosey, The first rack in the store houses the cheap and rough looking trade in rifles, First in the row is a Slazenger .22 single shot, scruffy stock but an ok Barrel and bolt.
After twisting my wife's arm a few times my wallet is a bit lighter and the .22 comes home with us.

It is a full size stock, my boy is 7... A bit of quick research into LOP for kids, a few measurements and trials on cardboard and a measurement is obtained.
A quiet evening at work sees me with a few hours spare to have a play with the cut off saw, a rasp and some sandpaper. The stock loses 70mm off the butt and I thinned up the grip quite a bit too so his little mitts can hang onto it a bit better.

A quick sand down, not too fussy as it had a few bigger imperfections, A splash of Rustic Oak furniture stain and that'll do. I may thin the grip a bit further. The barrel is still full length, I can't justify the cost of getting it shortened and he will lose the front sight if I was to cut it.

When he is bigger I will square the butt off and add a pad to lengthen the stock again, and later on again he can use the stock from my old Slazenger.
    2 Rifles, one bolt... Bugger.

Sanded down, no great finesse used but not too bad from a distance, a bit oil to hide the scratches

Good work. The boy will love that.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

Good on you did the same for our boys.
    A single shot winchester.
    That was 15-20 years ago.
Have given it to mate for his boys.

Nice-keep the old bit of stock. you can always graft it back on as needed later on.
I did the same with an old Mossberg .22 years ago.
I shortened the barrel, but (long time ago and don't have it for reference so a bit hazy on details) made a sleeve for the muzzle that I fashioned into a front sight and left a thread for a silencer. Only problem was the mag was a POS and never worked properly

I used the below method, but added a bit as the chidlins tend to keep growing. Have now done a Rossi 243 with a cheek riser to fit him too.

I've built a few kids sized rifles over the years, both my boys learnt to shoot with a single shot Remington cut down to 770mm. As they got older I gave it away to some young fella. And since then I've done 4 or 5, all eventually given away. Last year I figured I needed another as the grandkids are starting to get big enough. Its important with kids that the rifle is kids size. Obviously the butt needs to be shortened, but I also move the pistol grip forward and trim it down so little fingers can use the trigger correctly. And I trim the stock and barrel length to just over legal length. I dont worry too much about having to replace the bit I cut off the butt. For the smaller kids I leave the butt without a butt pad, then as they grow I add a butt pad. For bigger kids I use a slip on pad to add another 25mm if needed. And I scope them as I get frustrated trying to teach little ones how to effectively use irons. hopefully I can add a couple of pic's here to show the latest off.Name: 20190120_204926.jpg

Size: 7.41 MB Thats my grandson with the hare, shot on his second day of ever using a rifle. We went through a couple of boxes of ammo on the range and he was able to hold a 50mm group at 50 metres with 10 shots. On the second day the hare showed up and he shot it at 70 metres leaning over a strainer assembly, smack in the chest, it just rolled over and never moved. the other young fella is using the same rifle and shot off about 30 rounds, using a 20lt container as a target. He hit it and was so excited. The day before he watched his Dad shoot his very first deer, so was an exciting weekend.

And I was able to post the pic's but the 'puter tipped one on the side - dont know how to fix that.

yip that pistol grip thing can be a bit of a trick to get around...with the single bakail shotgun I cut a piece off bottom of jandle and contoured it to fit then taped it in place.....little hands were much closer to trigger so didnt creep up the stock to take shot.

I roughed both the pistol grip and the cheekpiece up with 40 grit sandpaper and slapped some builders bog on it. Then tidied it up with a sanding disc, but that bogs bloody hard after a few days! I also take a fair bit off the back of the pistol grip. For this last rifle, I wanted it to look like a long range rig similar to what we use, as it will be used a fair bit at gong shoots. And I painted it black cos pink bog doesn't quite blend in with a wood stock.

Should probably be in the bubba thread but here it is.
My boy is finally getting longer so needed to increase lenght of pull.
Also bubbad a cheek riser on there so hopefully now his head actually contacts the stock when his eye is in alignment with the scope.
