what glue to use...
Ok so I have an older ruger m77 mk2 with the old Skeleton stock.....anyone familiar with them will know ruger incorporated their own sling swivels, which is fine until you come to mount a bipod on it......ok so I have brought me a qd stud and swivel to make the problem right only to find the underside of the forend quite thin.....so my thoughts were to partially fill this so as to give the stud something to lock into without ripping out.... so after much talking about it and explaining my problems, my question is what glue to use. I was thinking some high quality epoxy with some balloon fillers but will this adhere properly with the synthetic stock?......hopefully someone has an answer......cheers
Matt

Super strength Arildite will be as good as anything. Just rough up the surfaces before you apply it. Not sure what "balloon fillers" are but a small block of solid plastic (or wood or anything else the stud will screw into) inserted in the stock will make it plenty strong enough. If you are using a threaded QD stud then the thread will pull the block down and the glue will not be under any stress at all.

Clean it with acetone and sand or scuff with 40 grit so the surface is really rough. Drilling a few shallow keyways also helps. Epoxy would be my choice but polyester (fibreglass) would be fine. If you want to use micro balloons get one that is low viscosity or mixing will be too difficult. Devcon on its own should be ok though. Ive bedded a few plastic stocks and this shouldnt be too different, just make sure you do a big enough area to spread the load adequately.

Thanks Marty and shearer i had planned on cleaning it down anyhow and scuffing it up some wasn't sure if the epoxy would adhere properly so thanks guy's

Same as Marty said. What you're doing is similar to the bedding process. Rough it up and put some holes into the stock inner (not all the way through) so the resin has something to lock into. You could use JB weld, but since you have epoxy and balloons, that will work just fine. Make sure you leave barrel clearance, and dam the area with plasticine or clay so it doesn't flow where you don't want it to. Your balloon mix should be relatively thin to maintain strength and flow so it will fill properly.

Thanks peril....we use a similar type of system when bogging holes/ chips in mdf for paint finish...the holes give the glue somewhere to lock into....I have access to some west system epoxy and filler balloons hence using them......

Ok the epoxy seems to have adhered nicely, although I didn't have any acetone so figured that a little 2way thinners would be ok, did a small test patch and the synthetic didn't melt. So wiped her up and poured a little glue in till it covered the qd screw and reached the top of the wee baffles in the stock and Bob's ya uncle......still gotta take her out for testing and hopefully the recoil won't screw it up and cause to delaminate.

Also I never bothered to install any wood or plastic blocks as I figured the screw in place and the glue flooded around it and being that I had balloons that just the glue should be plenty strong .....time will of course tell being that it's a 7mm rem mag...
