    AR15 - Cleaning regime question

Just wondering... as a noobie to the AR15:

    1. How often do you remove your gas tube for cleaning?
    2. How often do you remove the gas block and clean it? (I have an adjustable gas block)
    3. How often do you pull your BCG apart - the firing pin and rotating parts, that is?
    4. Do you ever pull the gas port/tube off the top of the BCG?

    Appreciate some thoughts. Cheers.

    1) never
    2) never
    3) probably every 1000/2000 rounds. get yourself a AR15 specific scraper (I use the Real Avid 12-in-1). During serious SR comps like Nationals, I clean the BCG each night
    4) never

Mate... would agree with that to a certain point.I buy in bulk a lot of Russian ammo ,steel casing etc.. shoot the shot out of the stuff,it’s cheap but comes with issues..... smoke residues etc.... cleaning is required

I dismantle the BCG spray it in brake clean and clean dry and re oil. Spray brake clean down the gas tube and barrel pull barrel thru and light oil. Blow compressed air down the gas tube.
They once upon a time used to issue pipe cleaners for the gas tube never tried it and never bothered they just keep shooting and shooting. Any carbon probably ends up in the BCG anyway.

I get the cleaning if your shooting dirty ammo - personally, I pay more for the ammo to get the clean stuff, then I don't have to clean them.

It's like for reloading, ap 70 / ap 50, could be used (dirty), but vit n320 is clean as, so n320 gets used.

Also, the cleaner burning ammo, just makes things more reliable, and generally more consistent, therefore shoot better.

Never had a misfire or ejection problem yet... I’ll pump a 1000 rounds down range before I even think about a clean

If you can find it, 3-in-1 do a "tool cleaner" spray can. This is the number one best carbon remover I have ever used for cleaning ARs. Mitre 10 used to stock it but I don't think it was a big seller. I tried to buy a case of it but can't get it.
CRC Contact cleaner is the next best but poorer substitute. I bought a case of this and use it as a post barrel scrub flush to waste for the barrel and gas tube, then air blow the gas tube and oil the barrel. It's not as harsh as break cleaner.

    Same process for the BCG.

Once a year I throw all my bolts into the ultrasonic cleaner, bolt actions as well.

Thanks for the great advice team.

It sounds like the perfect rifle... just shoot it and don't worry about cleaning it until it gives trouble. A bit like my Ruger 10/22.

And I need to buy some N320 powder? Is this any cleaner than the likes of 2206 or similar? And on the subject of reloading for this calibre, do people just go for standard weights and measures or do people go tweaking things to suit? I note a lack of room in the magazine so I can't see any room for altering the seating depth and I imagine there's not much point in mucking about with custom powder loads... correct? Just load 'em and shoot 'em??

I can't believe I've waited so long to build one of these, they're so much fun. And its brought out the inner-Rambo in my teenage daughter... who has been getting great results at 100m with 7 shots almost touching.

Think about using ADI Benchmark 2 for a powder. Seems to burn clean.
