Not enough information in the article but the wording suggests that the shooters noticed what happened after firing, which probably means they had the opportunity to check their firing zone for people in the area and didn't.
Possibly the shooters were drifting down the river and the walkers ( unseen by those in the boat due to willows) unintentionally flushed out the ducks - and those in the boat focused on the departing ducks?
Hey we can all speculate!
This is exactly the sort of publicity that licenced firearms owners don't need right now. Please be careful out there!
most regions dont allow drift shooting on opening weekend...AND there are always warnings about doing so for just that reason....your firing zone changes quickly....
a bad day all around.
At least the guys went over to the ladys and asked if they were ok and offered assistants.Thats a big plus for them when the law has a talk to them.As MD said drift shooting and fireing zones change together, not good practice.
Wouldn’t be surprised if they weren’t supposed to be drift shooting, not sure on Otago rules but here it’s 4 weeks after opening before drift shooting can occur . The willows along the Clutha are pretty thick in places .

Looks like they’ve had the photos of the guys involved from the start. They definitely haven’t done themselves (or the rest of us..) any favours by not coming forward off their own bat.
sheeesh...then fellas will be shitting thier collective grundies now...BUT it ISNT a legal requirement to notify police if you have shot someone or been shot.....I KNOW THIS FOR FACT....well it wasnt 20 years ago as mate put pellets into leg of another chap on rabbit drive and I told him he best be letting coppers know...the coppers didnt want to know, nothing to do with them.
Youch! Looks like it is now though.
Bit of a reminder it’s always best to front foot fuck ups rather than hoping it goes away. Doesn’t just apply to shooting/hunting!

A bit more to further tarnish hunters' image :oh noes:

Doesn't matter if it's clap trap or not it's the shit that is willingly published by the media and read by the masses who then form their continuing negative opinion.
And clap trap or not the remains were dumped in a publish place. The fact that the nicer bits have been removed is irrelevant. WTF is wrong with people?
well then as a responsible FAL holder you should be first on telephone to report the drunkin behaviour so the licences of those few are removed....
in 30 plus years of duck shooting ,including 5 as warranted ranger,I have NEVER seen drunkin behaviour...I can ASSUME some bevvies were being consumed by folks shooting evening close to vehicles but dont know for certain....
it has been illegal for many years to leave gamebirds on ground/water so these bottom dwellers can be procecuted.....twice actually as ranger ALSO has powers under the littering act..... but we seldom hear of anyone being caught.
tip here::: for anyone breasting out birds and putting the remains in otto bin (as I do most years) cut the wings n neck off.... anyone seeing the carcase will see its been utilized . the big issue with this lot of bird dumping is the where it was done...IF IN FACT it was done there and the ANTIs havent scavenged them from elsewhere and put them there to take photos...has happened before.
Someone who did a mildy stupid thing has given a soap box and microphone to the antis to have a go at what is largely a healthy and sustainable pastime. Jumping from littering to banning duck hunting is a commendable leap, and makes full use of the proverbial 15 minutes of fame.
Shit when I served my apprenticeship, we would sit in the smoko room at the freezing works listening to the clatter of pellets on the roof after every bang from the swamp, drinking our tea and munching on our pies, wishing like shit we could be out there with them!! Instead of working!!
Never thought one lot might come through the window and break a cup or worse?
Yes, but a couple of morons gave them the stage to do so. Firearm ownership is not a right, and is under attack from many quarters. Everyone that uses a firearm is an ambassador, and needs to behave accordingly or our sports and interests are going to be eroded out from under us with the assistance of our own team.
Hunters hit women with errant pellets.
Said hunters have yet to come forward (last report?)
Hardly ambassadorial behaviour methinks.
Unless of course somehow it was the women's fault....
A few more entries on this thread should see that start to turn in that direction maybe?
Ha ha keep them coming Phil, we are almost there.
Ultimately we are all responsible for our own and others safety.
But some people are very inconsiderate and do not think of others and their pursuits.
You see people swimming in the area zoned for water skiing.
Fisherman out on boats the first weekend of May.
We don't go near Taupo during Ironman or around Taupo cycle race.
Avoid hunting rivers when they open for fishing.
School holidays long weekends consider influx of trampers.
Someone has been arrested for this.

Goodbye FAL
will be over 90 yards.... but thats not hard to get when drifting down a waterway....these fellas either didnt look on google earth first or didnt care.
did we do the check if legal to drift in that district on opening weekend??? cant remember...
If this guy looses his firearms license it just will prove you are better of with out one, I am NO way condoning what he did and we don't have all the facts, he left in a boat doesn't mean he was drifting. He was shooting towards a public track/walkway
The young fella down south with no license that got caught poacher got nothing
The lady protecting her crop with no license shot her husband got 6 months home detention
Brendon Tarrents to on line friends who went referees for him got what??
And then then you have Tarrant he is guaranteed three meals a day, a warm bed, a roof over his head and a tv for the rest of his life.
Agree. First 2 on your list didn't even have a FAL. The disincentive seems to be so trivial as to be meaningless. Unenforced rules undermine enforcement.
FFS, there's another report of someone being criminally dick-headed...

A stray bullet lodged in a wall in a family home in Puketitiri near Napier.:o
Please, if you know someone that is an idiot when using firearms, educate them to do better, or report them if they can't be responsible We are all going to be punished in the long term because of incidents like this.
@bigbear - another wet bus ticket case was about the firearms supplied to Quinn Patterson, who committed a double murder at Whangarei Heads back in 2017. Michael John Hayes supplied firearms - including MSSAs - to Patterson who killed a property manager and her daughter when the pair paid a visit to Patterson's home, apparently to install smoke alarms.
Hayes was sentenced to a year's home detention back in 2018. He admitted to several charges, including supplying firearms to Quinn Patterson, who did not have a firearm licence. The Judge said Hayes knew Patterson didn't have a firearms licence but left six guns at Patterson's home and helped him to buy more.
A year's home detention, for what lead to 2 people being killed??? Having had a licence, Hayes would have been acutely aware that his actions were illegal. The justice system is completely out of touch when it comes to sentencing.
