Thread: E-cat gun safe. Will it pass inspection????

I have mine in a detached garage with unbarred windows, no alarm and a couple of added on bolt locks with standard padlocks. Safe is bolted with 4x 12mm dynabolts to the concrete and 4x 12mm coach screws into the wall with a board over the studs between it and the safe. Inspector had no issue with it and I've now since added a security camera. Whilst I understand that won't prevent the crime, it may help solve it after the fact.

So no, detached garages are not a no go full stop, and no bars over your windows are not a requirement. But if you can do it and afford it, why not?

Just because something has passed inspection, doesn't mean you shouldn't add more to your security.

Out of curiosity is it possible to get a b/e cat safe signed off when bolted through a wooden floor onto a steel plate under joists?

Thinking of getting endorsements but don't have a concrete floor to put a safe on

Yes, but you would be best getting the details sorted with your AO before going ahead with it to save having to do it again.

Looks like a very good job. Only suggestion would be to use some decent sized washers underneath those small bolt heads. Not entirely necessary but it helps as the mild steel some gun cabinets are made from can be brittle.

No problem with that. Make the plate larger than the base area of your gun cabinet and the bolts unable to be undone (rounded, welded or burred) from underneath.

I'd cover that in cardboard, make it look like a tall cardboard box. Make it so the front swings open and put a couple hooks, one either side, into the wall and string a bungee between them to make it appear they keep the box upright against the wall in case of earthquake - also serves to keep the cardboard "door" shut. The sides will have to be a bit proud of the safe, or the safe handle will bulge through the front flap. Write "GAZEBO" on it with big letters visible from the door. And yes, place other junk next to it either side. Won't catch an eye. Security through obfuscation!

I'd hesitate to put bars on my garage windows. . . seems like throwing out a challenge to burglars. Just make sure the windows cannot ever be opened sufficiently for even Jenny Craig's ghost to squeeze itself in.
