Seems that these wee snoops not only check parking meters, etc but have been seen to get up close to what are obviously working vehicles (dirty, dusty, muddy...your typical farm ute or your off road pride and joy). They have a face up to window close look inside to see if there is a firearm in the vehicle.
If they see a firearm, and it's obvious that the owner isn't in visual contact with the vehicle then they call the cops to come and sort it out.
Seems that a couple of guys Ashburton way have been done over already.
Could be an urban legend? Maybe...but just in case...remember to hide that firearm under a blanket or coat, etc when you park up (and keep in visual contact with the vehicle).

It is fair and legal. If this is true the FAL holder broke the law. It is careless and stupid.

It wouldn't have to be a "meter maid/man" as anyone seeing a firearm in a vehicle could report it to the police to follow up.

If I saw it I'd probably take a picture or two to back up my story.
